1.1. Anthurium Papi Varigated x Shield
🌿 Anthurium 'Papi' (variegated) × 'Shield' is a magnificent hybrid aroid in the arum family, Araceae, created by crossing a variegated form of the Panamanian species Anthurium papillilaminum with a robust shield-form anthurium selection. The primary parent species, Anthurium papillilaminum, is native to the warm, wet lowland tropical forests of Panama, where it grows predominantly as a terrestrial herb anchored in nutrient-rich leaf humus. This premier collector-level hybrid unites the dark, velvety texture, deep emergent coloration, and marbled variegation of its papillilaminum lineage with the broad, protective shield-like leaf architecture and thick substance of its co-parent.
FUN FACT
The parent species Anthurium papillilaminum is endemic to only the coasts of Colón Province and Darién Province up to 100 meters above sea level.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
Anthurium 'Papi Varigated x Shield' exhibits a robust, compact terrestrial-to-epiphytic growth habit, producing thick, firm petioles that rise from a sturdy central crown. In container cultivation, mature specimens achieve an imposing height of 45 to 65 centimetres with a wide, architectural leaf canopy. The foliage is broadly ovate-cordate to shield-shaped (peltate-cordate), measuring 28 to 48 centimetres in length and 20 to 32 centimetres in width. The upper leaf surface possesses a luxurious, velutinous matte texture with dense microscopic papillae that give the dark foliage its velvety feel. Leaf substance is remarkably thick and cardboard-like, conferring durability against ambient drying. Emerging leaves unfurl in spectacular shades of dark violet-bronze, dark chocolate, or deep wine-red, adorned with irregular marbling, sectoral splashes, and specks of creamy-white, butter-yellow, and mint variegation. As the leaf blade matures over several weeks, the primary lamina transitions into an ultra-dark emerald to near-black green, making the variegation and pale green veins stand out in high contrast. The underside of each leaf is pale sea-green with delicate purplish veining.
FLOWER DETAILS
Mature plants produce inflorescences from leaf axils on erect, firm peduncles measuring 25 to 40 centimetres in length. The spathe is slender, oblong-lanceolate, measuring 7 to 12 centimetres long, and displays a subtle greenish hue tinged with deep purple or bronze along the margins. The spadix is cylindrical, erect, and measures 8 to 15 centimetres in length, adorned with hundreds of minute bisexual flowers arranged in compact spirals. The flowers undergo protogynous anthesis, with receptive stigmas secreting glistening droplets before pollen is shed. Under successful cross-pollination, the spadix gradually matures into a dense spike of succulent berries that contain viable seeds.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Requires bright, filtered indirect sunlight. A spot situated near an east-facing window or several feet back from an unobstructed south-facing window behind a sheer curtain is ideal. Avoid harsh direct sun exposure, which can scorch the variegated foliage and bleach dark leaf pigments.
- 💧 Water: Keep the substrate evenly and consistently moist without saturating the root ball. Water thoroughly when the top 30% to 40% of the chunky potting medium feels slightly dry. Ensure drainage holes remain unblocked so excess water drains immediately.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in high relative humidity between 65% and 85%. While it can tolerate moderate household conditions, placing the plant near a humidifier or within a glass plant showcase helps preserve pristine leaf margins and enhances emergent leaf expansion.
- 🪴 Soil: Demands an open, breathable aroid potting mix composed of 40% coarse Douglas fir bark, 25% chunky perlite or pumice, 15% coco coir chunks, 10% horticultural charcoal, and 10% rich worm castings for drainage and root health.
- 🏺 Potting: Best planted in a snug plastic nursery container or breathable unglazed terracotta pot fitted with ample drainage holes. Repot every 18 to 24 months in spring to refresh the organic components of the substrate.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower during warm spring and summer seasons, producing an impressive new leaf every 6 to 9 weeks under favorable conditions.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed once every 3 to 4 weeks during the active spring and summer growing period using a balanced liquid foliage fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Cease fertilizing during autumn and winter.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Anthurium 'Papi Varigated x Shield' serves as a magnificent centerpiece on a living room table, dedicated plant console, or within an indoor botanical collection. Maintain indoor ambient temperatures between 20°C and 27°C throughout the year, ensuring the plant is never subjected to temperatures below 16°C. Position the pot away from drafty entranceways, air conditioner vents, and heating radiators to safeguard its broad, velvety foliage.
