4.1. Rhipsalis Baccifera Horrida (Mouse Tail Cactus)
🌿 Rhipsalis baccifera, commonly called the mistletoe cactus or spaghetti cactus, belongs to the Cactaceae family. It is native to South and Central America and, unusually for a cactus, parts of subtropical Africa as well. In its native habitat it grows as a spineless epiphyte, cascading from tree branches. It is a beginner-friendly houseplant admired for its trailing, noodle-like stems.
FUN FACT
Rhipsalis baccifera is the only cactus species naturally found growing outside the Americas, with populations also occurring in parts of subtropical Africa — a genuine rarity in a family of plants almost entirely native to the New World.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
Instead of leaves, this cactus produces smooth, cylindrical, spineless stems that branch extensively and trail downward, creating a cascading, spaghetti-like curtain. In the wild, stems can stretch up to 9 metres long; as a houseplant, growth is slower but still generously trailing over years of care.
FLOWER DETAILS
Small, solitary white or greenish-white flowers appear along the stems, usually in winter and spring, followed by spherical white, pink, or red berries. The blooms are modest, and most growers value this species primarily for its unusual trailing form.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright, indirect light; direct sun can scorch the delicate stems, so filtered light is best.
- 💧 Water: Water when the top inch of soil feels dry — this jungle cactus wants more consistent moisture than a desert cactus, but still needs good drainage to avoid root rot.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Appreciates a humid environment; a bathroom or regularly misted spot helps it thrive.
- 🪴 Soil: A well-draining mix, such as a standard potting mix lightened with perlite, suits it well.
- 🏺 Potting: A hanging basket lets the trailing stems cascade as they would from a tree branch in the wild; it is a slow grower, so repotting is rarely needed.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Slow — it may take five to eight years to reach a generous trailing size, but can live for decades with good care.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a diluted fertilizer during the growing season; little to none is needed in winter.
WHERE TO PUT IT
A hanging basket in a bright bathroom or kitchen, away from direct afternoon sun, lets this trailing cactus cascade beautifully over time. Keep it away from cold drafts.
