4.1. Rhipsalis Lepismium Houlletianum
🌿 Rhipsalis houlletiana (now also classified as Lepismium houlletianum) belongs to the Cactaceae family and is native to the subtropical and tropical moist forests of Brazil and Argentina. In its native habitat, it thrives as an epiphyte, draping itself over branches in dappled forest shade. It is considered a beginner-friendly houseplant, prized for its easygoing, trailing habit.
FUN FACT
Unlike the desert cacti most people picture, this jungle cactus actually wants more water, not less, and is considered one of the easiest epiphytic cacti to grow, tolerating a fair amount of neglect once established.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
The stems are flattened and leaf-like, with scalloped or notched edges that give the plant its lush, trailing silhouette. Left unstaked, stems cascade gracefully from a hanging basket; staked, they can stretch up to 180 cm. There is no true foliage in the traditional sense — the flattened stems perform the work of leaves, a classic cactus adaptation.
FLOWER DETAILS
Creamy-yellow, funnel-shaped flowers appear along the edges of the stems when the plant gets enough light. They are followed by small, translucent, dark red to black berries. Flowering is more generous outdoors or near a bright window; deep shade tends to produce handsome foliage but few blooms.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright shade to dappled light — a few hours of gentle morning sun is ideal, but keep it out of harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch the flattened stems.
- 💧 Water: Keep lightly moist during active growth rather than letting it dry out completely like a desert cactus; ease off in winter. Good drainage is essential to avoid root rot.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Appreciates above-average humidity; a bright bathroom or kitchen works well.
- 🪴 Soil: A loose, well-draining mix — a standard cactus mix lightened with extra perlite or orchid bark suits it well.
- 🏺 Potting: A hanging basket or elevated pot lets the trailing stems cascade naturally; repot only when clearly root-bound.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate, with stems lengthening steadily through the growing season when given enough light and water.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a diluted balanced fertilizer during spring and summer; skip feeding in winter.
WHERE TO PUT IT
A hanging basket in a bright bathroom, kitchen, or an east-facing window is ideal — close enough to catch gentle morning light without sitting in hot afternoon sun. Keep it away from cold drafts and heating vents, which can dry out the thin, flattened stems too quickly.
