Hoya australis var. Green 6130

🌿 The Hoya australis var. Green, commonly called the Australian Wax Plant, is a delightful climbing vine from the Apocynaceae family. This variety hails from Australia and parts of Southeast Asia, where it grows as an epiphyte in humid forest environments. It's an excellent choice for intermediate plant lovers who want something rewarding without being too demanding. Here's a fun fact: the flowers produce so much nectar that it sometimes drips from the blooms, earning it the nickname "honey plant" among collectors.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya grows as a vining plant that can climb or trail depending on how you support it. The leaves are thick and succulent-like, oval to slightly elongated in shape. They're a deep, glossy green that catches the light beautifully. The texture is smooth and almost waxy to the touch, which helps the plant retain moisture in its natural habitat.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are absolutely worth the wait. They appear in clusters called umbels and are creamy white with burgundy-red centres that look almost painted on. Each bloom is star-shaped and releases a sweet, honey-like fragrance that's strongest in the evening. The clusters are visually stunning and can last for weeks once they appear. Mature plants tend to flower more readily, often in spring and summer when light levels increase. To encourage blooming, keep the plant slightly root-bound, maintain consistent care, and resist the urge to remove the flower stalks after blooms fade since they'll produce flowers again from the same spot.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light works best, though it can tolerate some direct morning sun. Aim for 6-8 hours of good light daily to encourage flowering
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top half of soil feels dry, roughly every 7-10 days in summer and every 14-21 days in winter. Bottom watering works well to avoid wetting the leaves
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Happy in average home humidity between 40-60%, though it appreciates occasional misting during dry winter months
  • 🪴 Soil: Needs a chunky, well-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir to prevent root rot
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or ceramic. Keep it slightly snug as hoyas bloom better when root-bound. Repot only every 2-3 years when roots fill the container
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower that can add several inches in 6 months under good conditions. In a year, expect new vines and fuller growth. Can reach 6-10 feet long at maturity if given support
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the sap may cause mild stomach upset if ingested in large amounts

WHERE TO PUT IT

This hoya does beautifully in bright living rooms, home offices, or bedrooms where it gets plenty of natural light. It's perfect near an east or west-facing window, or a few feet back from a south-facing one. You can let it trail from a hanging basket or train it up a small trellis or moss pole. Avoid placing it in dark corners, bathrooms with no windows, or right beside heating vents that create hot, dry air.
