🌿 Hoya archboldiana is a spectacular tropical houseplant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the highland rainforests of Papua New Guinea. This climbing species grows as an epiphyte in its natural habitat, clinging to tree branches in cool, misty mountain environments. Known for producing some of the largest flowers in the entire Hoya genus, it's an intermediate to advanced plant that rewards patient growers with extraordinary blooms. Here's something fascinating: individual flower clusters can measure up to 15 centimetres across and contain over 25 individual waxy flowers that emit a sweet, honeyed fragrance strongest at night.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This climbing species produces thick, leathery leaves that are deeply veined and slightly cupped. The foliage is dark green with a matte finish, and each leaf can reach 15 to 20 centimetres in length. New growth emerges with a reddish tinge before maturing to deep green. The vining stems are sturdy and woody as they age, and the plant naturally reaches for support structures to climb. Leaves are arranged opposite along the stems and maintain their substance year-round, giving the plant a robust, tropical appearance even when not in bloom.
FLOWER DETAILS
The star-shaped flowers are cream to pale pink with deep burgundy centres, arranged in massive dome-shaped clusters. Each individual bloom features a waxy texture with reflexed petals and a prominent corona. The fragrance is sweet and honey-like, intensifying during evening hours and attracting attention throughout the room. Flowering typically occurs once or twice yearly on mature plants, usually in late spring through summer. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and avoid removing old flower stems called peduncles, as these produce blooms repeatedly.
