Hoya Griffithii 6482

Hoya Griffithii 6482

🌿 Hoya griffithii is a rare wax plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the tropical forests of Thailand, Malaysia, and Borneo. This intermediate-level houseplant grows as a vining epiphyte in its natural habitat, clinging to tree branches in humid, shaded conditions. What makes this hoya particularly special is its fascinating leaf dimorphism—juvenile leaves look completely different from mature foliage, transforming as the plant ages. It's a collector's dream that rewards patience with stunning growth changes.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining hoya produces thick, succulent leaves that evolve dramatically as they mature. Young leaves emerge narrow and elongated with a deep green colour and subtle veining. As the plant matures, leaves become broader, almost oval, with pronounced venation that creates a quilted texture across the surface. The foliage has a slightly glossy finish and can develop burgundy undertones when exposed to bright light. Vines grow moderately and benefit from support structures to showcase the cascading habit.

FLOWER DETAILS

Hoya griffithii produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in shades of cream to pale yellow with dark maroon centres. The blooms have a waxy texture typical of hoyas and emit a light, sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evening. While not the most prolific bloomer, this hoya typically flowers once or twice yearly when mature and happy. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and maintain consistent watering during the growing season. Avoid moving the plant once buds form, as this can cause bud drop.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays that may scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Allow top half of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly in spring and summer, reduce frequency in fall and winter. Bottom watering works well to prevent stem rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60-80% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Aeration is critical to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, plastic or terracotta, sized just slightly larger than root ball. Repot every 2-3 years or when severely root-bound.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower, producing several inches of new growth over 6 months. Can reach 1-2 metres in length within a year under ideal conditions. Maximum vine length can exceed 3 metres.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar). Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, Hoya griffithii is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it safe for homes with curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya griffithii thrives in bright bathrooms, east or west-facing windows, or any room with consistent indirect light. It looks stunning in hanging planters where vines can cascade freely, or trained on a trellis or moss pole in a living room or bedroom. Avoid placing it in dark corners, near heating vents, or in cold drafty areas. Keep away from air conditioning units that create temperature fluctuations.
