Hoya Chlorantha

Hoya Chlorantha

🌿 Meet Hoya chlorantha, a vining tropical from the Apocynaceae family that hails from the humid forests of Southeast Asia. This beginner-friendly beauty is part of the massive Hoya genus, known for waxy leaves and stunning flower clusters. What makes this one special? Unlike many Hoyas that take years to bloom, H. chlorantha is a relatively eager bloomer once mature, rewarding patient growers with fragrant clusters that smell sweetest at night.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This climbing vine produces oval to slightly elongated leaves that are thick and succulent-like, with a glossy, waxy texture that catches the light beautifully. The foliage is a rich green colour, sometimes showing subtle veining depending on light exposure. As a vining plant, it naturally wants to climb or trail, making it perfect for hanging baskets or training up a small trellis.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are where Hoya chlorantha really shines. Each cluster, called an umbel, holds 10 to 20 star-shaped blooms in shades of pale yellow to creamy white with darker centres. The fragrance is sweet and slightly citrusy, intensifying in the evening hours. These blooms can last several weeks, and the plant will often rebloom from the same peduncle, so never cut off the flower stem after blooming finishes. To encourage flowering, give it bright indirect light, allow the soil to dry out between waterings, and keep it slightly pot-bound.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, around 6-8 hours daily. It tolerates some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch the leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top half of soil is dry. In spring and summer, this might be every 7-10 days. In fall and winter, reduce to every 2-3 weeks. Bottom watering works well to encourage deep root growth.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix. Use orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir in equal parts.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or plastic. Keep it slightly pot-bound to encourage blooming. Repot only every 2-3 years.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate. Expect 6-12 inches of new growth in six months under good conditions. After a year, vines can reach 2-3 feet. Mature specimens can trail several feet.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly from spring through summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya chlorantha contains compounds that can cause mild stomach upset if ingested by cats or dogs.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This Hoya does well in bright spots like east-facing windows, on shelves with grow lights, or in bathrooms with good natural light. Hanging near a window where it can cascade down works beautifully, or train it up a small moss pole for vertical interest. Avoid dark corners, cold drafty areas near exterior doors, or spaces with low air circulation where pests might settle in.
