Astrophytum myriostigma f. nudum

4.1. Astrophytum Myriostigma f. nudum 7207

SKU: 7207

🌿 Astrophytum myriostigma f. nudum, affectionately known as the Naked Bishop's Cap Cactus or Bishop's Miter, is a fascinating spineless succulent in the Cactaceae family, native to the high-altitude, rocky calcareous plateaus of northeastern and central Mexico. While typical wild Astrophytum myriostigma specimens are densely covered with thousands of microscopic white chalky scales, the cultivar form nudum is completely smooth and bare, showcasing pure, glossy emerald-green skin. It is an easy-care, beginner-friendly succulent for sunny spots.

FUN FACT

The genus name Astrophytum combines Greek for 'star' (astron) and 'plant' (phyton), while the species epithet myriostigma means 'myriad-spotted,' ironically contrasting with this smooth nudum form which completely lacks those thousands of white flecks.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

As a true cactus, this plant does not have traditional leaves; instead, its photosynthetic body consists of a solitary, globular-to-columnar stem with 5 (rarely 4 or 6) sharply defined, prominent vertical ribs. The 'nudum' form lacks the characteristic white flocking of the species, displaying clean, smooth, deep olive-green ribs that are completely devoid of sharp spines, making it pleasant and painless to handle. With age, the initially spherical stem slowly elongates into a magnificent architectural column reaching 15 to 25 centimetres in height indoors.

FLOWER DETAILS

During the warm months of spring and summer, mature Astrophytum myriostigma plants readily produce stunning, funnel-shaped daisy-like flowers from the apex of the stem. The blossoms are 4 to 6 centimetres across, featuring lustrous, pale canary-yellow petals with a delicate sweet scent and occasional orange or reddish throats. Individual blooms open under bright sunlight during midday and close by dusk, lasting for 2 to 3 days, with plants producing multiple successive blooms throughout the season.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Demands maximum bright light and thrives with at least 4 to 6 hours of direct indoor sunshine daily. A sunny south- or west-facing windowsill is ideal to maintain compact symmetry and promote flowering.
  • 💧 Water: Highly drought-adapted. Follow a strict soak-and-dry regimen: water thoroughly during spring and summer only when the soil has completely dried out. In late autumn and winter, withhold water almost entirely (water once every 6 to 8 weeks or not at all).
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers dry, low-humidity environments (20% to 40%). It easily tolerates typical dry indoor Canadian winter heating. Excessive atmospheric humidity combined with wet soil can trigger stem rot.
  • 🪴 Soil: Requires an extremely gritty, mineral-based, inorganic cactus substrate composed of 70% pumice, lava rock, coarse grit, and calcined clay mixed with only 30% organic cactus soil.
  • 🏺 Potting: Plant in an unglazed terracotta pot with drainage holes. Terracotta wicks moisture away from the roots, allowing the mineral mix to dry swiftly and protecting against overwatering.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Very slow. It takes several years to gain a few centimetres of growth, making it a permanent, low-maintenance living ornament that rarely outgrows its container.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed once or twice during the spring and early summer growing period using a low-nitrogen, high-potassium cactus fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Never fertilize in winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes. While not individually listed in ASPCA plant databases, Astrophytum is documented as non-toxic to cats and dogs by NC State Extension. Furthermore, because this 'nudum' form is completely spineless, it poses no puncture hazard to curious household pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Astrophytum myriostigma f. nudum is perfectly suited for warm, sunny windowsills, sunrooms, and brightly lit home office desks facing directly south or west. It looks exceptionally sophisticated styled in minimalist ceramic or terracotta planters. Ensure it receives excellent airflow and is kept well away from damp, poorly ventilated rooms or dark interior spaces where lack of light will cause unsightly elongation (etiolation).
