Aeonium 'Medusa'
DESCRIPTION
🌿 Meet Aeonium 'Medusa', a captivating succulent hybrid that gets its common name from the dramatic way its rosettes cascade and twist like the mythical Gorgon's serpentine locks. This member of the Crassulaceae family originates from selective breeding, drawing genetics from Canary Island natives. The rosettes form tight spirals of fleshy leaves that create an almost sculptural presence. This is an intermediate-level plant that rewards attentive care with striking architectural form. Here's something cool: unlike most succulents, Aeoniums are winter growers and go dormant in summer heat, making them perfect for Canadian homes where they thrive during our colder months.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
The growth habit is truly unique—multiple rosettes form on branching stems that curl and twist as they mature, creating that signature medusa-like appearance. Each rosette consists of spoon-shaped leaves tightly packed in geometric spirals. The foliage ranges from deep green to bronze-purple depending on light exposure and stress conditions. Leaves have a waxy, smooth texture with a subtle sheen that catches light beautifully.
FLOWER DETAILS
Mature plants produce conical flower spikes that emerge from the centre of individual rosettes, typically in late winter or early spring. The blooms are small, star-shaped flowers in shades of yellow to golden-cream, clustered densely along the spike. There's no significant fragrance, but the visual impact is remarkable as the flower stalk can reach 30 centimetres tall. The aesthetic appeal lies in the contrast between the architectural rosettes and the delicate blooms. Aeoniums are monocarpic, meaning each rosette dies after flowering, but the plant continues through its other branches. To encourage flowering, provide bright light during the growing season and allow the plant to reach maturity, which typically takes three to four years. A slight temperature drop in winter can also trigger bloom development.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light with some direct morning or late afternoon sun. Needs 4-6 hours of quality light daily. Too much harsh midday sun can scorch leaves.
- 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when soil is completely dry during fall through spring growing season, roughly every 10-14 days. Reduce dramatically in summer dormancy to once monthly or less. Always water at the base, never on rosettes. The soak-and-dry method works best.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Average home humidity of 30-50% is perfect. Does not require high humidity and actually prefers drier air.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Add extra perlite or pumice for improved drainage. Soil must dry out quickly.
- 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, terracotta works exceptionally well. Choose a pot slightly larger than the root system, roughly 2-3 centimetres wider than the base. Repot every 2-3 years in early fall when active growth resumes.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower during active season. Expect 5-8 centimetres of new growth over six months, doubling in size within a year under good conditions. Mature plants can reach 30-45 centimetres in height and width.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during the fall through spring growing season with diluted succulent fertilizer at half strength. Do not fertilize during summer dormancy.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. The thick leaves are usually unappealing to pets.
WHERE TO PUT IT
This succulent thrives in bright spaces like south or west-facing windowsills, sunrooms, or well-lit living areas where it can receive ample light without scorching heat. It makes an excellent statement piece on desks, shelves, or side tables in rooms with good natural light. The compact nature suits condos and apartments perfectly. Avoid placing it in steamy bathrooms, dark corners, or anywhere with poor air circulation. Keep away from heating vents during winter and air conditioning drafts in summer, as extreme temperature swings can stress the plant.
