1.2. Alocasia Regal Shield

🌿 Alocasia 'Regal Shield' belongs to the Araceae family and is a hybrid cross between Alocasia odora and Alocasia reginula. In its growth habit it forms an upright clumping rosette rather than a vine. It is an intermediate-to-easy houseplant prized for its dark, dramatic foliage with a velvety look.

FUN FACT

This hybrid was deliberately bred to combine the best of both parents: the deep, near-black coloring comes from its 'Black Velvet'-lineage parent, while its upright growth habit and improved cold tolerance come from the more robust Alocasia odora side of its parentage.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Leaves are dark green on top with striking purple-to-burgundy undersides, accented by lime-green veins. The plant grows as an upright clumping rosette, eventually reaching a substantial size with good care, well beyond the more compact size of some of its smaller Alocasia relatives.

FLOWER DETAILS

Like other Alocasias, mature plants can produce a typical aroid spathe-and-spadix inflorescence, though flowering indoors is uncommon and foliage remains the primary draw for growers.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Several hours of bright, indirect light daily; direct sun can burn the leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but never soggy — this hybrid is not drought-tolerant.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Appreciates consistent warmth and humidity; keep it away from air conditioning or heating vents.
  • 🪴 Soil: A well-draining mix with a high proportion of orchid bark and coarse sand suits it well.
  • 🏺 Potting: A sturdy pot with good drainage supports its eventually large size; repot as it outgrows its container.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast given warmth, humidity, and consistent moisture.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed with a diluted balanced fertilizer during the growing season.

WHERE TO PUT IT

A warm, humid room with bright indirect light suits this dramatic hybrid well. Keep it away from cold drafts and heating or cooling vents, which can stress the foliage.
