Anthurium (Papillilaminum × Carla Blackiea) × Red Crystallinum

SKU: 6411

🌿 The Anthurium (Papillilaminum × Carla Blackiea) × Red Crystallinum is a stunning hybrid from the Araceae family, combining the velvety texture of crystallinum parentage with deep burgundy and green foliage. This tropical aroid originates from selective breeding programs that merge South American Anthurium species, creating a plant that thrives in warm, humid environments similar to cloud forest understories. With its dramatic leaf colouration and moderate care needs, this hybrid suits intermediate growers who want something special without extreme difficulty. Fun fact: the red crystallinum lineage contributes to the plant's ability to develop darker pigmentation when exposed to brighter indirect light, making each leaf uniquely coloured depending on growing conditions.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hybrid grows as an upright rosette, producing elongated heart-shaped leaves that emerge with a coppery red tone before maturing into deep green with burgundy undersides. The leaves have a thick, velvety texture with pronounced veining that catches light beautifully, giving them a quilted appearance. New growth unfolds slowly, revealing layers of colour that shift as the plant matures. The foliage can reach lengths of 25-40 centimetres on established plants, creating a compact but dramatic presence that works well on plant stands or shelves where the leaf undersides can be appreciated.

FLOWER DETAILS

Like most hybrid Anthuriums, this plant can produce typical aroid inflorescences with a spadix and spathe, though flowering is secondary to its foliage appeal. When flowers do appear, they're usually creamy white to pale green, modest in size, and lack strong fragrance. The blooms emerge sporadically throughout the year rather than in distinct seasons, and they're more common on mature, well-established plants. To encourage flowering, maintain consistent warmth, humidity above 60 percent, and provide bright indirect light year-round. While the flowers aren't the main attraction, they add an interesting botanical element and confirm the plant is thriving in your care.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Avoid direct sun, which scorches leaves. Eastern or western windows with sheer curtains work well. Too little light reduces colour intensity.
  • 💧 Water: Keep soil lightly moist but never soggy. Water when top 3-5 centimetres feel dry, usually every 5-7 days in summer, 10-14 days in winter. Bottom watering prevents crown rot. Use room-temperature filtered or rainwater.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Needs 60-80 percent humidity consistently. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other tropicals. Low humidity causes crispy leaf edges and stunted growth.
  • 🪴 Soil: Chunky, well-draining mix is essential. Combine orchid bark, perlite, peat moss, and charcoal in equal parts. Mix must allow air to roots while retaining some moisture.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use plastic or glazed ceramic pots with multiple drainage holes. Pot should be just slightly larger than root ball. Repot every 18-24 months in spring when roots emerge from drainage holes.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Produces 3-5 new leaves per growing season. Takes 2-3 years to reach mature size of 40-60 centimetres tall and wide. Maximum spread rarely exceeds 75 centimetres.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3-4 weeks during spring and summer with diluted liquid fertilizer at quarter strength. Use balanced formulation or one slightly higher in nitrogen. Skip fertilizer in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. All Anthuriums contain calcium oxalate crystals that are toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Causes mouth irritation, drooling, and digestive upset. Keep out of reach of curious pets and children.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This Anthurium thrives in bathrooms with natural light, where ambient humidity from showers benefits the plant. It also does well in bedrooms or living rooms near east or west-facing windows, especially when placed on a plant stand that showcases its sculptural form and colourful undersides. Avoid placing it in cold drafts near exterior doors, directly above heating vents, or in dark corners where lack of light causes leggy growth and colour loss. Keep away from air conditioners and furnace registers that dry the air. The plant needs stable temperatures and consistent conditions, so avoid moving it frequently once you find a good spot.
