Anthurium Papi x Red Crystal

Anthurium Papi x Red Crystal

SKU: 6418

🌿 The Anthurium Papi x Red Crystal is a stunning hybrid combining the best traits of its parent plants. This member of the Araceae family originates from the tropical rainforests of Central and South America, where anthuriums naturally grow as epiphytes in the humid understory. This particular hybrid is considered intermediate in care difficulty, making it accessible to growers with some experience who can maintain consistent humidity and warmth. Here's something fascinating: anthuriums can live for decades with proper care, and their long-lasting blooms can persist for months at a time, making them one of the longest-flowering houseplants available.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hybrid displays an upright growth habit with impressive foliage that emerges from a central crown. The leaves are large, heart-shaped, and feature a rich, deep green colouration with a glossy, almost leathery texture that catches the light beautifully. The foliage has prominent veining that adds dimension and visual interest, while new leaves unfurl in shades of bronze before maturing to their full deep green. The plant maintains a compact, clumping form that works well in containers without sprawling or vining.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are where this hybrid truly shines, producing spectacular spathes in deep red to burgundy tones with a crystalline sheen that gives the plant its name. The waxy, heart-shaped spathes surround a contrasting spadix and can last for two to three months per bloom. While there's no fragrance, the visual impact is remarkable, with the glossy surface reflecting light in ways that make the blooms appear to shimmer. This anthurium can bloom multiple times throughout the year, especially during warmer months. To encourage frequent flowering, maintain high humidity, provide bright indirect light, feed regularly during the growing season, and keep temperatures consistently warm above 18°C.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is essential; avoid direct sun which scorches leaves. Needs 6-8 hours of filtered light daily. East or north-facing windows work best.
  • 💧 Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water when top 2-3 cm feels dry. In spring and summer, water 2-3 times weekly; reduce to once weekly in winter. Bottom watering or slow, thorough top watering works best to avoid crown rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Requires high humidity between 60-80%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants. Mist daily if needed.
  • 🪴 Soil: Needs well-draining, chunky mix. Combine orchid bark, perlite, peat moss, and charcoal. Soil must be airy and never compacted.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use plastic or ceramic pots with excellent drainage. Choose pots just slightly larger than root ball, typically 15-20 cm diameter. Repot every 2-3 years in spring when roots appear crowded.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth, producing 3-5 new leaves over 6 months under ideal conditions. In one year, expect significant size increase. Mature plants reach 45-60 cm in height and width.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (20-20-20) at half strength. Reduce to monthly in fall, stop in winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No, toxic to cats and dogs. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This anthurium thrives in warm, humid spaces like bathrooms with good natural light, bright kitchens, or living rooms away from heating vents and air conditioners. It performs beautifully in conservatories, sunrooms, or any room where you can maintain stable warmth and humidity. Place it on a shelf or plant stand where its glossy foliage and blooms can be appreciated at eye level. Avoid cold drafts, dark corners, and rooms with dry air. Keep away from south or west-facing windows with intense direct sun, cold hallways, and rooms with temperature fluctuations below 15°C.
