Astrophytum asterias - Sand Dollar Cactus 7203

🌿 The Sand Dollar Cactus, scientifically known as Astrophytum asterias, belongs to the Cactaceae family and originates from the arid regions of southern Texas and northeastern Mexico. This unique succulent earned its common name from its distinctive flattened, round shape that resembles a sand dollar or sea urchin. With its perfectly symmetrical form and absence of sharp spines, this cactus is ideal for intermediate plant enthusiasts who appreciate living geometry. Here's a fun fact: unlike most cacti, Astrophytum asterias is nearly spineless, making it one of the safest cacti to handle with bare hands.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This cactus grows in a compact, solitary form with a distinctly flattened, spherical body that sits close to the ground. The plant features eight perfectly symmetrical ribs adorned with small, fuzzy white areoles arranged in neat rows. The body colour ranges from greyish-green to deep olive, and the surface has a smooth, almost waxy texture that helps it retain moisture in harsh conditions.

FLOWER DETAILS

The Sand Dollar Cactus produces stunning daisy-like flowers that emerge from the crown center during spring and summer. Each bloom measures about 3 centimetres across, displaying bright yellow petals with vibrant orange-red centers. The flowers are unscented but visually striking against the plant's muted body colour. While flowering isn't constant, a healthy specimen can produce multiple blooms throughout the growing season. To encourage flowering, provide plenty of bright light, allow a cool dry rest period in winter, and use a low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer during the active growing months.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright, direct sunlight for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate full sun but benefits from light afternoon shade in extreme heat.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when soil is completely dry during spring and summer (every 2-3 weeks). Reduce to once monthly in fall. Stop watering entirely in winter. Use the soak-and-dry method, allowing water to drain completely.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in low humidity, 20-40% range. Tolerates average home conditions.
  • 🪴 Soil: Fast-draining cactus mix with added perlite and coarse sand. Avoid moisture-retentive soils.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use shallow terracotta or unglazed clay pots with drainage holes. Pot should be 2-3 cm wider than the plant. Repot every 3-4 years in early spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Extremely slow-growing, adding only 1-2 cm per year. Reaches 5-8 cm diameter at maturity after 10-15 years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted cactus fertilizer at half strength. No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, non-toxic to cats and dogs. Safe to keep around curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Sand Dollar Cactus on a south-facing windowsill, sunny desk, or bright shelf where it receives maximum direct light. This plant works beautifully in home offices, living rooms with large windows, or sunrooms. It's perfect for minimalist spaces, desert-themed collections, or modern interiors. Avoid placing it in bathrooms, kitchens with high humidity, or rooms without adequate natural light.
