Anthurium King Veitchii Wide Form

Anthurium King Veitchii Wide Form

🌿 The Anthurium King Veitchii Wide Form, also known as the King Anthurium, belongs to the genus Anthurium within the Araceae family. Native to the cloud forests of Colombia, this spectacular aroid grows as an epiphyte on trees in its natural habitat, developing massive, elongated leaves that can reach impressive lengths. This particular wide form variation produces broader, more substantial foliage compared to the standard King Veitchii. It's considered an intermediate to advanced plant, requiring specific humidity and temperature conditions to truly thrive. Here's something fascinating: in its native habitat, this species can produce leaves over two metres long, making it one of the most impressive foliage anthuriums in cultivation.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This anthurium displays an upright to semi-climbing growth habit, naturally wanting to attach itself to a support structure as it matures. The leaves are dramatically elongated and pendulous, with a pronounced width that sets this form apart from the narrower varieties. The foliage emerges in a deep emerald green, developing a leathery, almost quilted texture as it matures. Each leaf displays prominent veining that creates a ribbed appearance across the surface, adding depth and dimension to the already stunning foliage.

FLOWER DETAILS

The King Veitchii produces typical aroid inflorescences consisting of a spathe and spadix, though this plant is primarily grown for its magnificent foliage rather than flowers. When mature specimens do bloom, the spathe appears in pale green to cream colours, lacking any notable fragrance. The flowers are modest compared to the dramatic leaves and appear infrequently on indoor specimens. To encourage flowering, maintain consistent high humidity, provide adequate light without direct sun, and ensure the plant has reached maturity with a stable root system. Most growers focus on the incredible foliage rather than expecting regular blooms from this species.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is essential. Needs around 6-8 hours of filtered light daily. Never place in direct sunlight as it will scorch the leaves. East or north-facing windows work well, or set back from south or west exposures.
  • 💧 Water: Keep the growing medium consistently moist but never waterlogged during spring and summer. Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter, allowing the top few centimetres to dry between waterings. Water when you insert your finger and the medium feels barely damp. Bottom watering or careful top watering works well, ensuring you don't leave standing water in the pot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Requires high humidity between 70-85%. This is non-negotiable for healthy growth. Use a humidifier, place on a pebble tray, or grow in a naturally humid room like a bathroom with adequate light.
  • 🪴 Soil: Needs an extremely chunky, well-draining epiphytic mix. Combine orchid bark, perlite, charcoal, and a small amount of peat or coco coir. The medium should never compact or stay soggy.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with excellent drainage holes. Clay or terracotta pots help wick away excess moisture. Size should allow for root growth but not be excessively large. Repot every 18-24 months or when roots fill the container, typically in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate growth. Expect 2-4 new leaves over six months under ideal conditions. In one year, a young plant might produce 4-6 leaves. Mature specimens can eventually develop leaves 60-90 cm long or longer, with substantial width.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in autumn, and hold off completely in winter. A formulation designed for aroids or orchids works well.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. All anthuriums contain calcium oxalate crystals which are toxic to cats, dogs, and other pets. Ingestion causes oral irritation, excessive drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep well out of reach of curious animals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This plant thrives in bathrooms with bright windows, where natural humidity stays elevated. It also does well in living rooms or bedrooms if you can maintain humidity through a nearby humidifier. Consider placing it near east-facing windows where it receives gentle morning light, or in a bright spot set back from more intense western or southern exposures. A moss pole or wooden plank support helps it grow upright and display its leaves properly. Avoid placing it near heating vents, air conditioners, drafty windows, or high-traffic areas where the delicate leaves might get damaged. Keep it away from fireplaces and radiators that dry out the air. Rooms with fluctuating temperatures or low humidity will cause browning leaf edges and stunted growth.
