Begonia Black Burkilii 6668
🌿 Begonia burkillii 'Dark Form' is a mesmerizing rhizomatous begonia in the Begoniaceae family, native to the deeply shaded, humid tropical rainforest understories of Arunachal Pradesh in Northeast India. It was formally described by botanist S.T. Dunn in 1920 and named in honor of British botanist Isaac Henry Burkill. It is considered an intermediate to advanced collector-level houseplant prized for its brooding, velvet-textured foliage and extraordinary optical properties.
FUN FACT
The parent species Begonia burkillii was first scientifically described by Dunn in 1920.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
Begonia burkillii 'Dark Form' exhibits a creeping, rhizomatous growth habit with thick fleshy rhizomes that run along the soil surface. The foliage is broadly elliptic to asymmetric-ovate, featuring velvety surfaces that emerge in deep chocolate-bronze and mature into an extraordinary near-black, obsidian-green coloration. A contrasting mint-green to silver streak frequently traces the central midrib. Under angled lighting, the dark leaf surface flashes with an enchanting, luminous teal-blue iridescence. The foliage reaches 10 to 15 centimetres in length, forming a compact, dense rosette of moody, sculptural greenery.
FLOWER DETAILS
In mature specimens during spring and early summer, Begonia burkillii produces delicate, upright inflorescences carried on slender, reddish peduncles above the dark foliage canopy. The unisexual flowers feature pure white to soft blush-pink tepals surrounding bright golden-yellow stamens on male flowers and winged seed capsules on female blossoms. The blossoms offer a delicate, ethereal contrast against the midnight-dark leaves. While attractive, experienced collectors often pinch early flower buds to channel the plant's metabolic energy into producing larger, more intensely iridescent foliage.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect light, but strictly avoids direct sunlight. In fact, slightly dimmer indirect light encourages the development of deeper, darker pigments and enhances the blue iridoplast flash.
- 💧 Water: Keep the potting medium consistently and lightly moist, but never soggy. Water thoroughly when the surface centimetre of substrate feels dry, applying water directly to the soil to avoid wetting the velvety leaves.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Demands high atmospheric humidity between 65% and 85%. It flourishes exceptionally well inside terrariums, glass cloches, indoor greenhouses, or humidified plant cabinets.
- 🪴 Soil: Requires a porous, fluffy, and moisture-retentive substrate composed of sphagnum moss, perlite, coarse vermiculite, and a small portion of peat or leaf mold for superior root respiration.
- 🏺 Potting: Best cultivated in shallow, wide pans or terracotta containers with drainage holes to accommodate creeping surface rhizomes. Repot gently every 12 to 18 months in early spring.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower under warm, humid conditions. It steadily extends its creeping rhizome, producing fresh leaves at regular intervals.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during the spring and summer growing season with a balanced, liquid tropical houseplant fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Never fertilize during winter dormancy.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Begonia burkillii 'Dark Form' is a showpiece plant for indoor terrariums, humid bathroom shelves with bright frosted windows, or specialized plant display cabinets. If grown in open rooms, group it closely with other tropical plants over a wide pebble water tray to maintain humidity. Shield strictly from cold window drafts below 15°C and keep well away from dry heating vents and drafty air conditioning.
