2.1. Begonia Eyelashes
🌿 Begonia Eyelashes (scientifically known as Begonia bowerae), also commonly called the Eyelash Begonia, is a charming miniature rhizomatous perennial belonging to the Begoniaceae family, native to the tropical rainforest understories and shaded limestone cliffs of southern Mexico, particularly Oaxaca and Chiapas. In its wild habitat, it creeps along the forest floor and mossy rock crevices under dappled shade. It is an easy-care, beginner-friendly foliage plant celebrated for its compact, bushy habit and striking eyelash-fringed leaf margins.
FUN FACT
As a rhizomatous begonia, the rhizome stores nutrients and water for the plant which helps this plant survive more readily than other types.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This delightful species features a creeping, rhizomatous growth habit that stays delightfully compact, rarely exceeding 15 to 25 centimetres in height while forming a dense, mounding dome of foliage. The leaves are small, asymmetrical, and broadly cordate with pointed tips, measuring 4 to 8 centimetres across. The leaf surface showcases an exquisite emerald-green to chartreuse background, dramatically accented by dark chocolate, bronze, or charcoal patches radiating along the outer margins. The crowning glory of the plant is the dense row of stiff, dark reddish-brown hairs (trichomes) lining the leaf edges and petioles, evoking the appearance of delicate eyelashes that give the plant its iconic common name.
FLOWER DETAILS
During late winter and early spring, Begonia bowerae sends up slender, wiry, pale pink flower scapes that rise well above the mounded foliage. The inflorescence consists of loose clusters of small, delicate, shell-pink to pure white two-petaled blossoms adorned with cheerful yellow stamens. While the blooms are petite and ephemeral, they provide a lovely seasonal contrast against the dark-patterned foliage. Once blooming concludes, snip spent flower stalks near the rhizome using clean scissors to encourage fresh leaf production.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Prefers moderate to bright, indirect filtered light for 6 to 8 hours daily. An east-facing windowsill with soft morning sun is ideal. Direct midday sun will easily scorch the thin foliage and bleach the chocolate margin patterns.
- 💧 Water: Keep the substrate evenly and lightly moist, watering when the top 2 to 3 centimetres feel dry. Water around the base of the plant into the soil, avoiding splashing water directly onto the fuzzy leaves to prevent fungal powdery mildew.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in moderate to elevated humidity between 55% and 75%. It performs exceptionally well in terrariums and glass cloches, but adapts satisfactorily to ambient indoor air if grouped with companion plants.
- 🪴 Soil: Requires a light, fluffy, well-draining potting mixture composed of 50% peat moss or coco coir, 30% perlite, and 20% orchid bark or compost to ensure high aeration around the creeping rhizomes.
- 🏺 Potting: Best planted in shallow, wide containers or terracotta bowls with drainage holes, accommodating its surface-creeping rhizomes. Repot only every 18 to 24 months when rhizomes reach the pot rim.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower during spring and summer, steadily branching from the rhizome to produce a dense, lush rosette within a single season.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3 to 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid tropical houseplant fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Withhold fertilizer completely in autumn and winter.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Begonia Eyelashes is perfectly proportioned for compact spaces, such as bathroom vanities with frosted windows, bedside nightstands, home office desks, and enclosed glass terrariums. An east-facing window or a spot 1 to 2 metres back from a south-facing window with sheer curtains provides optimal lighting. Keep the plant away from drafty exterior doors, air conditioning currents, and direct proximity to heating radiators that cause crispy leaf edges.
