Begonia ningmingensis dark form
🌿 Begonia ningmingensis 'Dark Form' is an extraordinary, compact rhizomatous begonia in the Begoniaceae family, native to the rugged limestone karst formations of Ningming County in southwestern Guangxi, China, and adjacent karst zones in northern Vietnam. Formally described in 2003 by botanists Ding Fang, Yi-Gang Wei, and Ching-I Peng in the Botanical Bulletin of Academia Sinica, this section Coelocentrum specialist is an intermediate to collector-level houseplant celebrated for its dramatic star-patterned, midnight-dark foliage.
FUN FACT
The parent species Begonia ningmingensis was first scientifically described by D.Fang, Y.G.Wei and C.I Peng in 2006.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
Begonia ningmingensis 'Dark Form' grows as a compact, creeping perennial with thick, succulent rhizomes that creep along the substrate surface. The leaves are broadly ovate to suborbicular with deeply cordate bases, measuring 8 to 15 centimetres across. In this dark selection, the leaf lamina matures into an intense, velvety charcoal-black or deep espresso tone, contrasted sharply by bright silvery-white and pale mint-green markings that radiate outward from the leaf center along the primary veins like a shooting star. The leaf undersides are saturated in rich burgundy-crimson, providing dramatic contrast when viewed from any angle.
FLOWER DETAILS
During late winter and spring, mature specimens produce delicate, erect inflorescences held above the foliar rosette on slender, glandular-pubescent red stalks. The flowers feature soft blush-pink to near-white tepals that frame prominent yellow stamens. While the blossoms are dainty and charming, this species is grown primarily for its high-contrast, graphic foliage. Pruning spent flower stalks helps preserve rhizome vigor for new leaf generation.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. Avoid direct sunlight, which scorches the velvety dark leaf surfaces and washes out the sharp silver contrast.
- 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2 centimetres of potting medium feel dry. Keep the substrate evenly moist but ensure rapid drainage; avoid letting the rhizome sit in standing water to prevent rot.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Highly prefers elevated humidity between 65% and 80%. It flourishes exceptionally well in terrariums, humid plant cabinets, or rooms equipped with an ultrasonic humidifier.
- 🪴 Soil: Requires a coarse, highly aerated potting medium consisting of coarse perlite, chopped sphagnum moss, pumice, and peat moss with a touch of horticultural charcoal for optimal drainage and root aeration.
- 🏺 Potting: Plant in a shallow, wide pot with drainage holes to allow the creeping rhizome to spread naturally. Repot every 12 to 18 months in spring as the rhizome reaches the container perimeter.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower during warm spring and summer months, producing a succession of intricately patterned new leaves.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during the spring and summer active growing period with a balanced foliage fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength. Withhold fertilizer throughout late autumn and winter.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Begonia ningmingensis 'Dark Form' is a stunning accent plant for glass terrariums, cloches, bright office desks, and well-lit bathroom shelves. An east-facing exposure or bright north window provides ideal illumination without heat stress. Shield from cold window drafts below 15°C and keep safely away from dry forced-air heating vents.
