Begonia Rex 'McLaughlin'

Begonia Rex 'McLaughlin'

🌿 The Begonia Rex 'McLaughlin' is a stunning foliage begonia that belongs to the Begoniaceae family. This cultivar originates from the tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, where its wild relatives thrive in shaded, humid forest floors. Known for its dramatic leaf patterns and vibrant colours, this rex begonia is considered an intermediate-level plant, requiring a bit more attention to humidity and watering than your average houseplant. Fun fact: Rex begonias are often called "painted-leaf begonias" because their foliage looks like it's been hand-painted by nature herself.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This begonia grows in a compact, bushy habit with rhizomatous stems that spread outward rather than climbing or trailing. The leaves are the true showstoppers, featuring an asymmetrical heart shape with spiralled or swirled patterns. Colours range from deep burgundy and silver to bright green, often with metallic sheens and dark veining that creates intricate designs across each leaf. The texture is slightly pebbled or bumpy, giving the foliage a tactile, almost quilted appearance that catches light beautifully.

FLOWER DETAILS

While Begonia Rex 'McLaughlin' can produce small clusters of pale pink or white flowers on thin stems, they're generally understated compared to the foliage. The blooms are delicate, with four petals forming a simple star shape, and they lack significant fragrance. Most growers actually remove the flower stalks as they appear because flowering can drain energy from leaf production, and the leaves are the main attraction. If you want to encourage the plant to focus on its gorgeous foliage, simply pinch off flower buds when you spot them. The flowers don't add much to the overall aesthetic, so this plant is all about those incredible leaves.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. Aim for 4-6 hours of filtered light daily, such as near an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south-facing one.
  • 💧 Water: Keep the soil lightly moist but never soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, usually once or twice a week in spring and summer, less in autumn and winter. Bottom watering works well to prevent water from sitting on leaves, which can cause spotting.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants to maintain moisture in the air, especially during Canadian winters when indoor air gets dry.
  • 🪴 Soil: Needs a well-draining, lightweight mix. Combine peat or coco coir with perlite and a bit of orchid bark for aeration. The soil should hold some moisture but allow excess water to drain quickly.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a shallow pot with drainage holes, as rex begonias have shallow root systems. Repot every 1-2 years in spring, going up just one pot size. Terracotta or ceramic pots work well to prevent overwatering.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. Expect several new leaves over 6 months under good conditions. Within a year, it can fill a 6-8 inch pot. Mature plants reach about 12-18 inches in height and width.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3-4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer (half strength). Stop or reduce fertilizing in autumn and winter when growth slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Begonias contain oxalates that are toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This begonia thrives in bathrooms with good natural light, where ambient humidity from showers keeps it happy. It also does well in living rooms or bedrooms placed on a plant shelf, side table, or dresser away from direct sun and heating vents. Terrariums or enclosed plant cabinets are excellent options if you want to maintain consistent humidity. Avoid placing it near drafty windows, air conditioners, or radiators, as sudden temperature changes and dry air will stress the plant and cause leaf edges to brown.
