Blue Fern

SKU: 6921

🌿 The Blue Fern, scientifically known as Phlebodium aureum 'Davana' (also called Polypodium aureum), belongs to the Polypodiaceae family and originates from the tropical regions of the Americas. This fern is a beginner-friendly plant with striking powdery blue-grey fronds that bring a unique coastal or silvery touch to indoor spaces. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte on trees or rocks in humid forests. Fun fact: the underside of its fronds displays bright orange spore clusters that add an unexpected pop of colour when viewed up close.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This fern has an upright to slightly arching growth habit with deeply lobed, wavy fronds that fan out gracefully. The leaves are a distinctive blue-grey or silvery-green colour with a soft, velvety texture that catches the light beautifully. Each frond is wide and feather-like, giving the plant a lush, full appearance even when young.

FLOWER DETAILS

Blue Ferns do not produce traditional flowers. Instead, they reproduce through spores found on the undersides of mature fronds. These spore clusters appear as round, golden-orange dots arranged in neat rows, adding visual interest without the need for blooms. While not showy like flowering plants, the spores contribute a subtle decorative element that fern enthusiasts appreciate.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Prefers bright indirect light but tolerates lower light conditions. Around 4-6 hours of filtered light daily is ideal.
  • 💧 Water: Keep soil lightly moist during spring and summer, allowing the top inch to dry between waterings. Reduce watering in fall and winter. Bottom watering or soaking the pot works well.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home levels (40-50%).
  • 🪴 Soil: Prefers loose, well-draining potting mix with peat, perlite, and orchid bark.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use shallow, wide pots with drainage holes. Repot every 1-2 years or when roots fill the pot.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. Adds 2-4 new fronds over 6 months, reaching 1-2 feet wide in a year. Mature size is typically 2-3 feet tall and wide.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted liquid houseplant fertilizer. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, non-toxic to cats and dogs.

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Blue Fern works well in bathrooms, kitchens, or any room with decent humidity and indirect light. It looks great on plant stands, shelves, or hanging planters where its fronds can spread naturally. Avoid placing it near heating vents, air conditioners, or in direct sunlight, as this can scorch the delicate fronds or cause them to dry out.
