Bonsai Natal Plum (Carissa macrocarpa)

Bonsai Natal Plum (Carissa macrocarpa)

The Natal Plum, scientifically known as Carissa macrocarpa, is a member of the Apocynaceae family and hails from the coastal regions of South Africa. When trained as a bonsai, this evergreen shrub becomes a miniature work of art, showcasing dense foliage and an elegant branching structure. Its care level sits comfortably in the intermediate range, making it suitable for hobbyists who have some experience with bonsai techniques. Here's something interesting: in its natural habitat, the Natal Plum produces edible, cranberry-like fruits that local communities have harvested for generations, though bonsai specimens rarely fruit indoors.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This bonsai displays a compact, spreading growth habit with sturdy branches that respond well to wiring and shaping. The leaves are thick, glossy, and oval-shaped, typically measuring about 2-5 cm in length. They emerge in a rich, dark green colour that catches the light beautifully. The foliage has a leathery texture that feels substantial to the touch, and the leaves grow in opposite pairs along the stems, creating a balanced visual effect.

FLOWER DETAILS

The Natal Plum produces pristine white, star-shaped flowers with five delicate petals that unfurl from pink-tinged buds. Each bloom releases a sweet, jasmine-like fragrance that can fill a room with its pleasant scent. The flowers are truly eye-catching against the dark green foliage, creating a striking contrast. Blooming typically occurs in spring and summer, though indoor specimens may flower sporadically throughout the year. To encourage flowering, ensure the plant receives adequate bright light and allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings during the growing season. A light application of phosphorus-rich fertilizer in early spring can also promote bud formation.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light to partial sun. Needs 4-6 hours of bright light daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but protect from intense afternoon rays.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry. Reduce frequency in winter. Water less during dormancy. Bottom watering or careful top watering works well to avoid disturbing the shallow root system.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Average home humidity of 40-60% is acceptable. Can tolerate slightly drier conditions once established.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining bonsai soil mix with good aeration. A blend of akadama, pumice, and lava rock works excellently.
  • 🏺 Potting: Shallow bonsai pot with drainage holes, ceramic or glazed stoneware. Repot every 2-3 years in early spring. Pot should be proportional to tree size, typically one-third the tree's height.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate growth. Adds 5-10 cm per year with regular pruning. Mature bonsai size depends on training but typically reaches 20-40 cm in height over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer with balanced liquid bonsai fertilizer. Reduce to monthly in autumn. No fertilizer during winter dormancy.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains cardiac glycosides that are toxic to cats and dogs. All parts of the plant, especially the milky sap, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and heart issues if ingested.

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Bonsai Natal Plum thrives in bright spaces like south or east-facing windowsills, sunrooms, or well-lit living areas where it can serve as a focal point. It works beautifully on a dedicated bonsai display shelf, side table, or desk where its sculptural form can be appreciated up close. Home offices and studies are ideal locations. Avoid placing it in dimly lit corners, bathrooms with low light, or near heating vents and radiators that create hot, dry air currents. Keep it away from cold drafts and don't position it where curious pets might nibble on the foliage.
