3.1. Bougainvillea plant

🌿 Bougainvillea (botanically belonging to the genus Bougainvillea, encompassing popular species such as Bougainvillea spectabilis and Bougainvillea glabra) is an exuberant, sun-loving ornamental woody vine in the Nyctaginaceae family, native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, including Brazil, Peru, and southern Argentina. In warm climates, it grows as a vigorous evergreen scrambling shrub or liana armed with curved thorns. It is an intermediate, high-light houseplant celebrated for its spectacular, prolonged displays of paper-thin, intensely vibrant floral bracts.

FUN FACT

Plants of the genus Bougainvillea grow best in dry soil, in very bright full sun and with frequent fertilisation; but they require little water once established.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Bougainvillea features woody, branching stems equipped with stiff, curved thorns that enable the plant to scramble through trellises, fences, and arbors. The leaves are ovate to elliptical, measuring 4 to 10 centimetres long with smooth margins and pointed tips, displaying a rich, matte emerald-green color. Under strong indoor illumination, the plant forms a lush, sprawling framework that can be trained up a bamboo hoop or wire trellis, or maintained as a compact, bushy container specimen through regular seasonal pruning. Stems produce seasonal flushes of fresh foliage followed by dense floral clusters.

FLOWER DETAILS

The true flowers of Bougainvillea are small, tubular, cream-to-yellow blossoms that are relatively inconspicuous. What appears to be a dazzling flower is actually a trio of modified leaves called petaloid bracts that surround each cluster of three true flowers. These paper-textured bracts come in electrifying shades of magenta, purple, crimson, coral, gold, and white, earning the plant its popular moniker 'Paper Flower'. Under bright sun, bracts persist for 6 to 10 weeks, producing multiple spectacular blooming cycles from spring through autumn. Pruning branch tips after each flowering cycle stimulates fresh flowering wood.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Demands maximum bright light and thrives with at least 5 to 6 hours of direct indoor sunshine daily. Place in the sunniest south- or west-facing window available; insufficient sunlight will cause heavy leaf drop and completely prevent flowering.
  • 💧 Water: Drought-tolerant once established. Water thoroughly only when the top half of the soil has dried out completely. Allow excess water to drain away freely. In winter, reduce watering significantly, allowing the soil to dry nearly through between light drinks.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Very adaptable. Performs well in average household humidity (40% to 50%) and tolerates dry indoor Canadian winter heating effortlessly, provided temperature remains above 15°C.
  • 🪴 Soil: Requires a coarse, fast-draining potting mixture with a slightly acidic pH (5.5 to 6.5). A mix of quality potting soil amended with 30% coarse sand, perlite, and pumice ensures optimal root drainage.
  • 🏺 Potting: Best kept slightly root-bound in a terracotta or ceramic container with drainage holes, as snug root conditions stimulate heavy flowering bract production. Repot every 2 to 3 years in early spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Fast grower in warm, bright conditions. Can add 60 to 100 centimetres of vine length in a single summer, easily shaped by pruning.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 2 to 3 weeks during spring and summer with a water-soluble fertilizer high in potassium and phosphorus (bloom booster) diluted to half strength. Suspend feeding in autumn and winter.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Bougainvillea demands the brightest, sunniest locations in the home, such as a south-facing bay window, sunroom, heated greenhouse, or bright atrium. It performs wonderfully on a sunny balcony or patio during warm Canadian summer months before being brought indoors prior to autumn frosts. Avoid dimly lit rooms, drafty cold entryways below 12°C, and locations with insufficient direct sunshine where it will shed its leaves.
