Cercestis Mirabilis

Cercestis mirabilis

SKU: 7335

🌿 Meet the Cercestis mirabilis, a rare climbing aroid from the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. This member of the Araceae family is a true collector's gem, prized for its unique silvery-grey foliage that catches light like no other houseplant. While it requires intermediate care and attention to humidity, the reward is a stunning display of botanical artistry. Fun fact: in its natural habitat, this climber can scale trees over 10 metres tall, using aerial roots to anchor itself as it reaches toward the forest canopy.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Cercestis mirabilis is a vigorous climbing plant that produces elongated, arrow-shaped leaves with a distinctive metallic sheen. The foliage displays remarkable silver-grey tones with darker green veining that creates an almost iridescent effect. Leaves have a smooth, slightly waxy texture and can reach 15-25 cm in length when mature. As the plant climbs, it produces alternating leaves along its stems, creating a cascading display of shimmering foliage.

FLOWER DETAILS

Like many aroids, Cercestis mirabilis produces a spadix and spathe flower structure, though flowering is quite rare in indoor cultivation. When blooms do appear, they consist of a pale cream to greenish spathe surrounding a central spadix. The flowers have minimal fragrance and are more botanically interesting than showy. Indoor flowering typically occurs only when the plant reaches maturity and receives optimal growing conditions including high humidity, warmth, and bright indirect light. To encourage blooming, maintain consistent care, provide a climbing structure, and allow the plant to establish itself for several years.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is essential. Avoid direct sun which can scorch the delicate silvery foliage. Needs 6-8 hours of filtered light daily. East or north-facing windows work well.
  • 💧 Water: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during spring and summer. Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in fall and winter, allowing soil to dry slightly more between waterings. Bottom watering or gentle top watering works best.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Requires high humidity between 60-80%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other tropical plants to maintain moisture levels.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining aroid mix with chunky components. Combine orchid bark, perlite, peat moss, and charcoal for optimal drainage and aeration.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, terracotta or plastic both work. Choose a size that accommodates root growth with 3-5 cm extra space. Repot every 18-24 months or when roots emerge from drainage holes.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to fast growth during growing season. Can produce 15-30 cm of new growth over 6 months in ideal conditions. After one year, expect 30-60 cm of vine length. Can reach several metres with proper support.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly from spring through summer with diluted liquid fertilizer at half strength. Use a balanced formula or one slightly higher in nitrogen. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in fall and pause in winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains calcium oxalate crystals that are toxic to cats, dogs, and other pets if ingested. Can cause oral irritation, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing. Keep out of reach of curious animals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This climbing beauty thrives in bathrooms with natural light where humidity is naturally higher, or in living rooms and bedrooms equipped with humidifiers. Provide a moss pole, trellis, or wooden stake for the plant to climb and display its foliage properly. Place near an east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west window with sheer curtains. Avoid drafty areas near heating vents, air conditioners, or frequently opened exterior doors. Keep away from spaces with dry air or low light conditions like basements or interior rooms without windows.
