Cinnamon Plant (Cinnamomum verum)

Cinnamon Plant (Cinnamomum verum)

🌿 The Cinnamon Plant, scientifically known as Cinnamomum verum (also called Cinnamomum zeylanicum), belongs to the Lauraceae family and originates from the tropical regions of Sri Lanka and southern India. In its natural habitat, this evergreen tree grows up to 10-15 metres tall in warm, humid forests with rich, well-draining soil. As a houseplant, it remains manageable at 60-120 cm indoors, making it suitable for intermediate to advanced plant enthusiasts who appreciate aromatic foliage. The entire plant releases a warm, spicy cinnamon fragrance when leaves are brushed or crushed. Here's a fun fact: the cinnamon we use in cooking comes from the inner bark of mature trees, which is harvested, dried, and rolled into the familiar cinnamon sticks we see in stores.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

The Cinnamon Plant grows in an upright, bushy form with multiple stems that branch naturally as it matures. New leaves emerge with a striking reddish-pink colour before transitioning to deep glossy green as they age, creating a beautiful two-tone effect throughout the growing season. The leaves are oval-shaped with prominent veins running lengthwise, reaching 10-18 cm in length with a leathery, smooth texture that feels substantial to the touch. When crushed or brushed, the foliage releases an unmistakable warm, sweet cinnamon scent that fills the room.

FLOWER DETAILS

Mature Cinnamon Plants occasionally produce small, inconspicuous flowers that appear in clusters during the warmer months. The tiny blooms are creamy white to pale yellow with a delicate structure, though they lack significant fragrance compared to the aromatic leaves. While the flowers don't provide major visual impact, they add a subtle charm to the plant's overall appearance and may develop into small purple-black berries if pollinated. Flowering is infrequent indoors and typically occurs only on well-established plants that receive consistent warmth and bright light. To encourage occasional blooming, maintain stable temperatures above 18°C year-round, provide bright indirect light for at least six hours daily, and avoid temperature fluctuations during winter months.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but protect from harsh afternoon rays.
  • 💧 Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never waterlogged during spring and summer, watering when the top 2-3 cm feels dry. Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter, allowing the top 5 cm to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly until it drains from the bottom, using room-temperature water.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Requires 60-70% humidity. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or regular misting to maintain moisture levels.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, slightly acidic mix with peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark in equal parts. pH between 5.5-6.5 works best.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use terracotta or ceramic pots with drainage holes, 20-30 cm diameter for mature plants. Repot every 2-3 years in spring when roots fill the container.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth, adding 15-25 cm in the first year under ideal conditions. Can reach 60-90 cm within two years indoors, with a maximum indoor height of 120-150 cm.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Stop fertilizing in autumn and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Contains compounds that can cause gastrointestinal upset, drooling, and vomiting in cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Cinnamon Plant thrives in bright, warm spaces like south or east-facing sunrooms, conservatories, or near large windows with filtered light. It works beautifully in kitchens where the humidity from cooking benefits the plant and the aromatic leaves complement the culinary atmosphere. Bathrooms with windows also provide the humid environment this tropical plant craves. Place it in living rooms or bedrooms away from heating vents and air conditioning units that create dry air. Avoid dark corners, cold drafty hallways, north-facing rooms with limited light, or anywhere temperatures drop below 15°C regularly, as the plant will suffer and may lose leaves in these conditions.
