Commiphora wightii - Indian Bdellium-Tree

SKU: 6902

🌿 The Indian bdellium-tree, scientifically known as Commiphora wightii (family Burseraceae), is a drought-adapted succulent shrub native to the arid regions of India and Pakistan. In its natural habitat, this plant grows in rocky, sandy soils where it has evolved to store water in its thick, fleshy stems and branches. This is an intermediate-level plant that rewards patient growers with its unique sculptural form and aromatic resin. Here's something fascinating: Commiphora wightii produces guggul resin, which has been used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years and is still harvested commercially today for its therapeutic properties.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This plant grows as a compact, branching shrub with a somewhat sprawling habit that becomes more upright as it matures. The small, trifoliate leaves are sparse and deciduous, meaning they drop during dry periods as a survival mechanism. When present, the leaves are a soft grey-green colour with a slightly waxy texture that helps reduce water loss. The bark is papery and peels away in thin sheets, revealing smooth, pale green to greyish stems underneath that give the plant its distinctive character even when leafless.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers of Commiphora wightii are small and relatively inconspicuous, appearing in clusters along the branches. They are typically pinkish-red to pale pink in colour with a simple, star-like shape consisting of four to five petals. The blooms carry a faint, sweet fragrance that becomes more noticeable in the evening hours. While not the main ornamental feature of this plant, the flowers add subtle seasonal interest when they appear during the growing season. Flowering occurs sporadically, usually after periods of watering following dormancy. To encourage blooming, provide a distinct dry rest period during winter months followed by gradual increases in water and warmth as spring approaches.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Full sun to bright direct light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate partial shade but grows more compact and healthy with maximum light exposure.
  • 💧 Water: Water sparingly during active growth (spring through fall), allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once every 3-4 weeks or stop entirely. Use the soak-and-dry method, watering thoroughly then waiting until soil is bone dry.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers low humidity, ideally 30-40%. Thrives in typical dry indoor conditions and does not require misting or humidity trays.
  • 🪴 Soil: Fast-draining succulent or cactus mix with added perlite, pumice, or coarse sand. Soil should be gritty and provide excellent drainage to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use unglazed terracotta pots with drainage holes, sized just slightly larger than the root ball. Shallow, wide pots work well. Repot every 2-3 years in spring when roots become crowded.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow-growing. Expect 3-6 inches of growth per year under ideal conditions. Over one year, a young plant may add several branches. Mature specimens can reach 3-6 feet tall indoors with proper care and space.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed lightly during spring and summer months only, using a diluted (half-strength) cactus or succulent fertilizer once every 4-6 weeks. Do not fertilize during winter dormancy.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to pets, though the resin may cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals. The plant is not typically consumed by pets due to its woody nature, but monitor for any chewing behavior.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Indian bdellium-tree in the brightest spot available, such as a south-facing window, sunroom, or conservatory where it can receive maximum direct sunlight. It works beautifully on plant stands, shelving units, or as a statement piece on a sunny desk or table. This plant is ideal for warm, dry spaces like living rooms, home offices, or bedrooms with ample natural light. Avoid placing it in bathrooms, kitchens, or other high-humidity areas where moisture levels remain consistently elevated. Keep away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and windows that get frosty in winter, as this plant prefers consistent warmth and cannot tolerate freezing temperatures.
