Hoya Clemensorum

Hoya Clemensorum

🌿 Hoya clemensorum is a charming vining tropical from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines where it grows as an epiphyte in humid forests. This beginner-friendly hoya features thick, waxy leaves and produces clusters of fragrant flowers that smell sweetest at night. Fun fact: unlike many hoyas that take years to bloom, this species often flowers within its first year of growth, making it rewarding for new collectors.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This compact vining hoya has a trailing growth pattern that looks great in hanging baskets or trained on small supports. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped, moderately thick and succulent-like with a waxy coating that gives them a slight shine. Foliage ranges from medium green to darker green depending on light exposure, and the texture is smooth and firm to the touch.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers appear in rounded clusters of 10 to 20 star-shaped blooms, each about half a centimeter wide. They're creamy white to pale pink with darker pink centres, and the fuzzy texture makes them look almost unreal. The fragrance is sweet and citrusy, strongest in the evening and overnight. Blooms can last up to two weeks and the plant flowers multiple times throughout the warmer months. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, avoid moving the plant once buds form, and let the soil dry slightly between waterings during spring and summer.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
  • 💧 Water: Water when top two inches of soil are dry. Reduce frequency in winter. Water thoroughly until it drains, then empty saucer.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir. Needs excellent aeration.
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or plastic pot with drainage holes, 10-15cm diameter. Prefers being slightly rootbound. Repot every 2-3 years.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth, adding 15-30cm per year. Can reach 1-2 metres in length at maturity after several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly spring through summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No, mildly toxic to cats and dogs. May cause drooling, vomiting, or stomach upset if ingested.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place near an east or west-facing window where it gets filtered morning or late afternoon light. Works well in living rooms, bedrooms, or bathrooms with windows. Looks particularly nice in hanging planters or on shelves where the vines can cascade. Avoid dark corners, direct southern exposure during midday, or spots near heating vents and cold drafts.
