Crassula ovata 'Gollum' (Gollum Jade)

Crassula ovata 'Gollum' (Gollum Jade)

🌿 The Gollum Jade, scientifically known as Crassula ovata 'Gollum', is a succulent cultivar in the Crassulaceae family. Native to South Africa, this plant thrives in rocky, arid environments where it stores water in its thick, tubular leaves. It's a beginner-friendly plant that rewards minimal effort with quirky charm and resilience. Fun fact: The tubular leaves are actually a mutation of the standard jade plant, giving it an otherworldly appearance that inspired its name from Tolkien's character.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This compact, upright succulent grows in a shrub-like form with thick stems that become woody over time. The leaves are tubular and finger-like, curling inward at the tips to create a suction-cup appearance. They're a vibrant green with reddish tips that intensify under bright light. The texture is smooth and fleshy, with a slight waxy coating that helps retain moisture.

FLOWER DETAILS

Gollum Jade produces small, star-shaped flowers in white or pale pink during winter months. The blooms appear in clusters at the tips of branches and have a subtle, sweet fragrance. While not the main attraction, the flowers add a delicate contrast to the sculptural foliage. Flowering happens infrequently indoors, typically once every few years. To encourage blooms, provide cooler temperatures in fall and reduce watering slightly to mimic the plant's natural dry season.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect to full sun. Needs 4-6 hours of bright light daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun
  • 💧 Water: Water deeply but infrequently. In spring and summer, water when soil is completely dry (every 2-3 weeks). In fall and winter, reduce to once a month. Water at the base, avoiding leaves
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Low humidity preferred, 30-40% ideal. Tolerates average home conditions well
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix with perlite or coarse sand. Must drain quickly to prevent root rot
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or ceramic pot with drainage holes. Shallow and wide works best. Repot every 2-3 years in spring when rootbound
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Grows 2-4 inches per year. Can reach 12-18 inches tall and wide at maturity after several years
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Monthly during spring and summer with diluted succulent fertilizer at half strength. No feeding in fall and winter
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Mildly toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing vomiting and lethargy

WHERE TO PUT IT

The Gollum Jade thrives on bright windowsills, particularly south or west-facing spots where it can soak up plenty of light. It works well in home offices, living rooms, or kitchen counters where its unusual form becomes a conversation piece. Avoid placing it in bathrooms or other high-humidity areas, and keep it away from drafty windows or heating vents that create temperature swings.
