Cereus jamacaru 'Cuddly Cactus' 7001
🌿 The Cuddly Cactus, scientifically known as Cereus jamacaru, is a columnar cactus species belonging to the Cactaceae family. Native to the arid regions of eastern Brazil, this plant thrives in harsh, sun-drenched environments where it can grow into massive tree-like structures. In cultivation, it remains much more manageable and is surprisingly beginner-friendly despite being a cactus. The cultivar name 'Cuddly Cactus' comes from its softer appearance compared to other desert cacti, though it still has spines so handle with care. Here's a fun fact: in its natural habitat, Cereus jamacaru can live for over a hundred years and provides important nesting sites for birds.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This cactus grows in an upright, columnar form with thick, ribbed stems that branch as the plant matures. The body is a blue-green to grey-green colour with prominent vertical ribs running along its length. The texture is smooth and waxy, which helps the plant retain moisture in dry conditions. Young plants typically display a single column, while older specimens develop multiple arms that create an impressive architectural presence.
FLOWER DETAILS
The Cuddly Cactus produces large, white nocturnal flowers that are truly spectacular when they appear. These blooms are funnel-shaped and can reach up to 25 centimetres in length, opening in the evening and closing by morning. They emit a sweet, pleasant fragrance that attracts night-flying pollinators. The flowers are stunning against the blue-green stem and create a dramatic contrast. Flowering typically occurs in summer when the plant is mature, usually after several years of growth. To encourage blooming, provide bright light year-round, reduce watering in winter to simulate dormancy, and ensure the plant has reached sufficient maturity and size.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Full sun to very bright indirect light. Requires 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for best growth and flowering
- 💧 Water: Water deeply but infrequently in spring and summer, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce to minimal watering in fall and winter. Water at the base, never overhead
- 🌡️ Humidity: Low humidity preferred, 20-40% is ideal. Tolerates typical dry indoor air very well
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or coarse sand for excellent drainage
- 🏺 Potting: Terra cotta or unglazed ceramic pot with drainage holes. Choose a pot slightly larger than root ball. Repot every 2-3 years in spring
- 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Grows 10-15 centimetres per year. Can reach 30-60 centimetres indoors after several years, though stays much smaller than wild specimens
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted cactus fertilizer. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter
- 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally non-toxic to pets, but the spines can cause physical injury if chewed or brushed against. Keep away from curious animals
WHERE TO PUT IT
The Cuddly Cactus thrives in bright, sunny spots like south-facing windows, sunrooms, or covered patios during warm months. It works well in modern or minimalist spaces, on plant stands, or as a focal point in bright living rooms and home offices. Avoid placing it in low-light areas, humid bathrooms, or anywhere children and pets might accidentally brush against its spines. Keep it away from high-traffic areas where it could be knocked over.
