Ferocactus emoryi (Emory's Barrel Cactus) 7103

SKU: 7103

🌿 Ferocactus emoryi, commonly called Emory's Barrel Cactus or Coville's Barrel Cactus, belongs to the Cactaceae family and is native to the Sonoran Desert regions of Arizona and northwestern Mexico. This slow-growing succulent thrives in extreme heat and rocky, well-draining soils in its natural habitat. With its robust, cylindrical form and striking red spines, this cactus is suitable for intermediate to advanced plant keepers who can provide the specific growing conditions it needs. Here's a fun fact: in the wild, Ferocactus emoryi can live for over 100 years and reach heights of up to 2.5 metres, making it one of the most impressive barrel cacti in North America.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This cactus grows in a classic barrel shape, starting compact and gradually elongating with age into a tall, upright column. The body is covered in prominent ribs that run vertically along the plant, creating deep grooves between them. The surface is a grey-green to blue-green colour, and the texture is firm and waxy to the touch. What really stands out are the thick, hooked red or pink spines that radiate from areoles along each rib, giving the plant a bold, architectural presence.

FLOWER DETAILS

Ferocactus emoryi produces stunning tubular flowers that appear in shades of bright red, orange, or yellow, typically blooming in late spring to early summer. The flowers emerge from the crown of the plant and have a waxy texture with multiple layers of petals. They have a light, sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators like bees and hummingbirds. The blooms are visually striking against the grey-green body and red spines, adding a burst of colour to the plant's rugged appearance. Flowering occurs annually once the cactus reaches maturity, which can take several years. To encourage blooming, ensure the plant experiences a cool, dry rest period in winter and receives full sun during the growing season.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Full, direct sun for at least 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate partial shade but will not thrive or bloom without bright light.
  • 💧 Water: Water deeply but infrequently during spring and summer, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings. Reduce watering to once a month or less in fall and winter. Bottom watering or soaking the pot works well to avoid crown rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in low humidity, ideally 20-40%. Does not tolerate high humidity environments.
  • 🪴 Soil: Extremely well-draining cactus or succulent mix with added pumice, coarse sand, or perlite. Soil should be gritty and dry quickly.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use unglazed terracotta pots with drainage holes, sized just slightly larger than the root ball. Repot every 3-5 years in early spring, handling carefully due to sharp spines.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Very slow. Grows 2-5 cm per year under ideal conditions. Can reach 30-60 cm in height after 10-20 years indoors. Maximum size in cultivation is around 1 metre tall.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed once in spring with a diluted, low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to pets, but the sharp, hooked spines pose a physical injury hazard. Keep out of reach of curious pets and children.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place Ferocactus emoryi in the brightest spot you have, ideally a south or west-facing window where it can receive several hours of direct sunlight daily. It works well in a sunny living room, home office, or sunroom where temperatures stay warm year-round. Outdoor placement on a balcony or patio during summer is ideal if you can provide full sun exposure. Avoid placing it in low-light areas, bathrooms with high humidity, or anywhere with poor air circulation. Keep it away from cold drafts and ensure it is not exposed to freezing temperatures, as it is not winter-hardy in most of Canada.
