Gardenia jasminoides

Gardenia jasminoides

SKU: 6958

The Gardenia, scientifically known as Gardenia jasminoides, belongs to the Rubiaceae family and originates from tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, particularly China and Japan. In its natural habitat, this evergreen shrub thrives in warm, humid forests where it develops its signature glossy foliage and intensely fragrant white blooms. 🌿 Gardenias are considered intermediate to advanced plants, requiring specific environmental conditions to flourish indoors. Here's something fascinating: the intoxicating scent of gardenia flowers has been used in perfumery for centuries, and in traditional Chinese medicine, the fruit of some gardenia species was valued for its properties.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Gardenias grow as compact, bushy shrubs with an upright habit that can be maintained through occasional pruning. The leaves are lance-shaped to oval, arranged in opposite pairs or whorls along the stems. They display a deep, glossy green colour that almost appears waxy, creating an elegant backdrop for the flowers. The leaf texture is smooth and leathery to the touch, with prominent veining that adds visual interest even when the plant isn't blooming.

FLOWER DETAILS

Gardenia flowers are pure white, sometimes with a creamy tint, and form as single or double blooms depending on the variety. The petals have a soft, velvety texture and spiral outward from the centre in a pinwheel or rosette shape. The fragrance is powerfully sweet and heady, often described as one of the most intoxicating scents in the plant world. These blooms are stunning against the dark foliage, creating a classic, elegant display. Gardenias typically flower from late spring through summer, though indoor plants may bloom sporadically if conditions are ideal. To encourage flowering, maintain high humidity, provide bright indirect light, ensure slightly acidic soil, and avoid moving the plant once buds have formed, as they're sensitive to environmental changes.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for most of the day, ideally 6-8 hours. Can tolerate some morning sun but protect from harsh afternoon rays which can scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during growing season (spring-summer). Reduce watering slightly in winter but never let soil dry out completely. Water when top inch of soil feels barely dry. Use room-temperature water and avoid getting water on leaves and flowers.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: High humidity essential, ideally 60-70%. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants. Low humidity causes bud drop and leaf yellowing.
  • 🪴 Soil: Acidic, well-draining soil with pH 5.0-6.5. Mix peat moss, perlite, and compost, or use an azalea/rhododendron potting mix.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use containers with drainage holes, sized proportionally to plant (not too large). Glazed ceramic or plastic pots help retain moisture. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, or when roots emerge from drainage holes.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth rate. Expect 15-30 cm of growth per year under ideal conditions. Mature indoor plants typically reach 30-60 cm tall, though some varieties can grow larger.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 2-4 weeks during spring and summer with acid-loving plant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce to monthly in fall and stop in winter. Yellowing leaves may indicate iron deficiency.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Gardenias are toxic to cats and dogs. Ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and hives. Keep out of reach of pets and children.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Gardenias thrive in bright bathrooms where natural humidity is higher, or in living rooms and bedrooms with east or west-facing windows that provide bright, filtered light. A sunroom or enclosed porch with good light and stable temperatures is ideal. They appreciate good air circulation but dislike drafts. Avoid placing near heating vents, air conditioners, or frequently opened doors where temperature fluctuations and dry air will stress the plant. Keep away from dark corners or rooms with insufficient natural light, as this will prevent flowering and weaken growth.
