Hoya Amicabilis
🌿 Hoya amicabilis is a fascinating, newly described species in the Apocynaceae family, native to the tropical montane forests of Central Java, Indonesia. Formally published in 2019 by botanists Sri Rahayu and Michele Rodda in the Nordic Journal of Botany, this unique plant departs from the typical climbing nature of most hoyas by growing as a bushy, free-standing shrub. It is an intermediate to collector-level houseplant celebrated by botanical enthusiasts for its compact shrubby architecture and bright, bell-shaped canary-yellow blossoms.
FUN FACT
In 2017 photos of this Hoya species with the unusual shrubby growth pattern were published in the Facebook group Hoya Indonesia.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
Unlike the vast majority of hoyas that require trellises or hanging baskets to accommodate vining stems, Hoya amicabilis exhibits a distinctive erect, shrubby growth habit with sturdy, self-supporting woody stems that reach 40 to 60 centimetres in height. The leaves are elliptic to lanceolate, measuring 6 to 11 centimetres in length and 2.5 to 4 centimetres in width. They display an attractive, satin olive-green hue with a smooth, glabrous texture, softly recurved margins, and prominent central midribs. Its compact, bushy profile makes it an exceptionally tidy and manageable indoor potted subject.
FLOWER DETAILS
The inflorescence of Hoya amicabilis is exceptionally distinctive within the genus, producing loose, nodding umbels carrying 5 to 12 bell-shaped (campanulate) blossoms. Each flower measures approximately 1.5 to 2 centimetres across, featuring luminous, golden-canary-yellow corolla lobes with softly revolute tips, surrounding an erect, ivory-yellow staminal corona. The flowers emit a delicate, sweet herbal fragrance and last for over a week in bloom. Never cut off the permanent flowering peduncles, as new flower umbels repeatedly emerge from existing spurs season after season.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Prefers bright indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. An east- or west-facing window providing soft morning or late-afternoon sun encourages compact branching and heavy floral bud initiation. Avoid scorching midday sun.
- 💧 Water: Allow the top 3 to 4 centimetres of soil to dry out between waterings. Use the soak-and-dry method, ensuring excess water drains away freely. The plant prefers slightly more regular hydration than desert succulents while demanding excellent drainage.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in moderate to high humidity between 55% and 75%. While it tolerates standard household humidity, higher ambient moisture maintains soft foliar textures and encourages flower retention.
- 🪴 Soil: Requires an airy, well-draining potting mixture formulated with fine orchid bark chips, perlite, pumice, and quality peat moss to provide root stability while ensuring excellent aeration.
- 🏺 Potting: Best suited for an upright ceramic or terracotta container with drainage holes. Hoyas flower most reliably when kept slightly root-bound in smaller pots; repot only every 2 to 3 years in spring.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower. It forms a tidy, multi-branched shrub over its first two seasons of active indoor cultivation.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3 to 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Suspend feeding throughout autumn and winter dormancy.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes. The ASPCA specifically lists wax plants (such as Hoya carnosa and Hoya kerrii) as non-toxic to cats and dogs, though Hoya amicabilis is not individually evaluated by the ASPCA database. As a member of the non-toxic Hoya genus, it is safe to keep around curious household pets.
WHERE TO PUT IT
Hoya amicabilis is ideally suited for desks, plant consoles, and living room side tables where its unusual shrubby form and charming yellow bell flowers can be admired at close range. Position it near an east-facing window or 1 metre back from a bright south-facing window. Shield the plant from cold winter drafts below 15°C and ensure it is kept away from direct blasts of heating registers and air conditioning vents.
