Hoya Benguetensis (Benvergarai)

Hoya Benguetensis (Benvergarai)

🌿 Hoya benguetensis, sometimes known in the trade as Hoya Benvergarai, is a spectacular vining species from the Apocynaceae family native to the mountain regions of the Philippines, particularly Benguet Province. This intermediate-level hoya captivates collectors with its thick, succulent-like leaves and clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that appear throughout the growing season. Unlike many hoyas that take years to bloom, this species rewards patient growers with reliable flowering once established. Here's a fun fact: the waxy coating on its leaves helps it retain moisture in its native cloud forest habitat, making it surprisingly forgiving if you occasionally forget to water.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya grows as a trailing or climbing vine with moderate vigour, producing thick, fleshy leaves that feel almost rubbery to the touch. The foliage emerges in a deep green colour with subtle veining that becomes more pronounced as leaves mature. Each leaf is oval to lance-shaped, measuring roughly 7 to 10 centimetres in length, with a glossy surface that reflects light beautifully. The stems are sturdy and can support the weight of the substantial leaves without drooping excessively.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers of Hoya benguetensis are truly something special, appearing in rounded clusters called umbels that can contain 15 to 25 individual blooms. Each tiny star-shaped flower features pale pink to cream-coloured petals with a darker pink or burgundy centre corona, creating a stunning two-tone effect. The blooms release a sweet, honeyed fragrance that intensifies in the evening, filling nearby rooms with their scent. This hoya blooms multiple times throughout spring and summer, with each flower cluster lasting up to two weeks. To encourage more frequent flowering, provide bright indirect light, maintain consistent watering during the growing season, and avoid moving the plant once flower buds appear, as they can be sensitive to changes in position.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Thrives in bright indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but protect from harsh afternoon rays which can scorch the leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 5 centimetres of soil feel dry, roughly every 7 to 10 days in spring and summer, reducing to every 14 to 21 days in winter. Bottom watering works well to prevent stem rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50 to 70 percent humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40 percent without issue.
  • 🪴 Soil: Needs a chunky, well-draining mix containing orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir in equal parts to prevent root rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, sized just slightly larger than the root ball. Terracotta or plastic both work well. Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring when roots circle the pot.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower, producing 15 to 30 centimetres of new growth in 6 months under ideal conditions. Can reach 1 to 2 metres in length over several years, with mature specimens potentially growing longer.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter when growth slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya species contain compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset, drooling, and vomiting if ingested by cats or dogs. The milky sap may also irritate skin in sensitive individuals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya benguetensis looks stunning in hanging baskets or on shelves where its trailing vines can cascade freely, making it perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices with bright windows. It also grows beautifully on a trellis or moss pole if you prefer an upright display. This plant does well in bathrooms with windows thanks to the naturally higher humidity. Avoid placing it in dark corners, near cold drafts from air conditioning vents, or in rooms that drop below 15 degrees Celsius in winter, as cold temperatures can damage the foliage and prevent flowering.
