Hoya campanulata 'White' 6244

🌿 The Hoya campanulata, commonly known as the Bell-Flowered Hoya, is a charming tropical vine from the Apocynaceae family. Native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and Malaysia, this species thrives in warm, sheltered environments where it climbs trees and rocks. It's considered an intermediate-level plant, requiring some attention to humidity and watering but rewarding growers with its unique blooms. Here's a fun fact: the flowers of Hoya campanulata are shaped like tiny bells and have a subtle, sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evening, attracting night pollinators in their natural habitat.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya displays a vining growth habit, making it perfect for hanging baskets or training on a trellis. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped, measuring about 5-8 cm in length, with a smooth, waxy texture. They're a deep green colour, sometimes developing darker veining as the plant matures. The foliage is relatively sparse compared to other hoyas, giving the plant an airy, delicate appearance that doesn't overwhelm smaller spaces.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are the true highlight of Hoya campanulata. They appear in clusters of 10-20 blooms, each one shaped like a tiny bell or lantern, about 1 cm across. The flowers are creamy white to pale yellow with a contrasting dark pink or burgundy corona in the center. They emit a light, sweet fragrance that's most noticeable in the evening hours. The blooms have a porcelain-like quality that makes them look almost artificial. This hoya typically flowers once or twice a year, usually in spring and late summer, though mature plants in ideal conditions may bloom more frequently. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and maintain consistent care without disturbing the peduncles (flower stalks), as they will produce blooms year after year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 4-6 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry. Reduce watering in winter to once every 2-3 weeks. Allow excess water to drain completely. Bottom watering works well.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60-80% humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs excellent drainage.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot 10-15 cm in diameter with drainage holes. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years or when severely root-bound.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Expect 15-30 cm of growth per year. Can reach 1-2 meters in length at maturity over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced fertilizer (10-10-10) or orchid fertilizer. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya campanulata is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing vomiting, drooling, and digestive upset. The sap may also cause mild skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya campanulata works beautifully in a bright bathroom where humidity is naturally higher, or near an east-facing window in a bedroom or living room. It's ideal for hanging planters or placed on a shelf where the vines can cascade down. You can also train it up a small trellis or moss pole. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, directly in front of heating vents, or in rooms with cold drafts near windows during Canadian winters, as temperature fluctuations can stress the plant and prevent flowering.
