Hoya Carnosa 'Splash'

Hoya Carnosa 'Splash'

🌿 Hoya carnosa 'Splash', commonly known as the Splash Wax Plant, is a cultivar of Hoya carnosa from the Apocynaceae family. This tropical vine originates from Eastern Asia and Australia, where it naturally climbs trees in humid forests. It's a beginner-friendly houseplant that rewards minimal effort with stunning foliage and occasional blooms. Fun fact: the waxy coating on its leaves actually helps the plant retain moisture in its natural habitat, making it surprisingly forgiving if you forget to water.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya grows as a vining plant with thick, succulent-like leaves that cascade beautifully from shelves or climb supports when given the chance. The leaves are oval-shaped and covered in irregular silvery-grey splashes and speckles against a deep green background, giving each leaf a hand-painted appearance. The texture is firm and waxy to the touch, with a slight sheen that catches light. New growth emerges with lighter variegation that deepens as the leaves mature.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers appear in rounded clusters called umbels, each containing multiple star-shaped blooms with fuzzy centres. They're typically pale pink to white with darker pink centres, creating a porcelain-like effect. The fragrance is sweet and honey-like, becoming stronger in the evening and sometimes filling an entire room. While the aesthetic appeal is delicate and charming, flowering usually occurs in spring and summer on mature plants. To encourage blooms, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, and resist the urge to remove old flower stems since hoyas often rebloom from the same spots year after year.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 4-6 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. In spring and summer, this might be weekly; in fall and winter, every 2-3 weeks. Bottom watering works well to encourage root growth
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Adaptable to average home humidity of 40-60%, though it appreciates 50-70% for optimal growth
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir to prevent root rot
  • 🏺 Potting: Plastic or terracotta pot with drainage holes, 4-6 inches diameter. Hoyas prefer being slightly rootbound, so repot only every 2-3 years when roots are visibly crowded
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. Expect 6-12 inches of new growth in 6 months under good conditions, 1-3 feet per year. Can reach 4-6 feet or more at maturity with proper support
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. The sap can occasionally cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Splash Wax Plant in east or west-facing windows where it receives bright, filtered morning or late afternoon light. It thrives on shelves, in hanging baskets, or trained up a small trellis in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices. The bathroom also works well if it has adequate natural light since the humidity benefits the plant. Avoid dark corners, north-facing windows with insufficient light, or spots directly in front of heating vents or air conditioners that create temperature fluctuations.
