Hoya Chinghungsingensis 6281

Hoya Chinghungsingensis 6281

🌿 The Hoya chunghsingensis is a charming tropical houseplant from the Apocynaceae family, native to Taiwan where it grows as an epiphyte in humid mountain forests. This vining species features thick, succulent-like leaves and produces clusters of fragrant, star-shaped flowers that smell like sweet honey mixed with vanilla. It's considered an intermediate-level plant, best suited for growers who have some experience with humidity-loving tropicals. Fun fact: this Hoya was named after Chunghsing University in Taiwan, where it was first studied and documented by botanists in the 1990s.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This is a vining plant that naturally climbs or trails depending on how you support it. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped, slightly cupped, and grow opposite each other along flexible stems. They're deep green with a semi-glossy finish and have a smooth, almost waxy texture that feels cool to the touch. New growth emerges lighter green before darkening with maturity.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers appear in rounded clusters called umbels, each bloom shaped like a five-pointed star with a raised center corona. They're creamy white to pale pink with darker pink or red centres, and the fragrance is strongest in the evening and at night. The scent is intensely sweet and carries well across a room. Blooms can last two to three weeks and the plant may flower multiple times during spring and summer if conditions are right. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, keep the plant slightly root-bound, avoid moving it during bud formation, and maintain consistent watering without letting it completely dry out between waterings.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for most of the day, around 6-8 hours. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top two inches of soil are dry. In spring and summer, this might be once a week. In fall and winter, reduce to every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to avoid wetting the leaves and stems.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60-80% humidity. Will tolerate average home humidity around 40-50% but grows more vigorously and flowers more readily in higher humidity.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs good air circulation around the roots.
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or plastic pots with drainage holes, sized just slightly larger than the root ball. Hoyas flower better when slightly pot-bound, so only repot every 2-3 years.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. Expect 4-8 inches of new growth in 6 months under good conditions, 12-18 inches per year. Mature vines can reach 3-6 feet in length indoors.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3-4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Some growers use orchid fertilizer. Stop fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya chunghsingensis contains compounds that can cause mild stomach upset, drooling, and vomiting if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This plant does well in bright bathrooms where humidity stays higher, or near east or west-facing windows in living rooms and bedrooms. It's beautiful displayed in a hanging basket or trained up a small trellis on a shelf or plant stand. The trailing vines look especially nice cascading from a high shelf or macrame hanger. Don't place it in dimly lit hallways, far from windows, or in dry rooms with forced air heating. Avoid spots with cold drafts from air conditioning vents or windows in winter.
