Hoya coriacea 'Silver'
🌿 Hoya coriacea 'Silver', commonly called the Wax Plant, belongs to the Apocynaceae family and hails from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, where it naturally climbs tree trunks in humid forests. This evergreen perennial is known for its thick, waxy leaves that shimmer with a silvery sheen. It's an intermediate-level plant that rewards patient growers with clusters of star-shaped blooms. Fun fact: the nectar from its flowers is so sweet that it can attract ants indoors if you're not careful.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya grows as a vining climber that can trail gracefully or be trained upward with support. The leaves are oval to oblong, roughly 10 to 15 centimetres long, with a leathery, succulent-like texture. Their surface has a distinctive silver-green hue that catches light beautifully. The foliage feels almost rubbery to the touch and holds moisture well, which is typical for hoyas adapted to periods of drought in their native habitat.
FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers emerge in rounded clusters called umbels, each bloom shaped like a perfect five-pointed star with a raised corona in the centre. They're typically creamy white to pale pink, sometimes with a hint of red at the centre, and produce a light, sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evening. The blooms are waxy and almost artificial-looking in their perfection. Flowering usually happens once or twice a year during warmer months, and you can encourage more blooms by providing bright indirect light, allowing the plant to become slightly root-bound, and not cutting off old flower stalks since hoyas often rebloom from the same spots.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. Some morning sun is fine, but avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch the leaves.
- 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 5 centimetres of soil are dry. In spring and summer, this might be once a week. In fall and winter, reduce to every 10 to 14 days. Bottom watering works well to avoid wetting the leaves.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50 to 70 percent humidity but tolerates average home levels of 40 percent without much complaint.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir. Needs aeration to prevent root rot.
- 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or plastic. Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring. Hoyas like being slightly pot-bound, so don't rush to upsize.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Expect 15 to 30 centimetres of new growth per year. Can eventually reach 2 to 3 metres in length when mature.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya coriacea contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset in cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach of curious pets.
WHERE TO PUT IT
This hoya thrives in bright living rooms, sunrooms, or near east-facing windows where it gets gentle morning light. It works well on shelves where the vines can cascade or near a trellis for climbing. Bathrooms with good natural light are excellent choices because of the extra humidity. Avoid dark corners, windowless rooms, or spaces with cold drafts from air conditioning vents. Keep it away from radiators and heating ducts that can dry out the air too much.
