Hoya Coriacea 'Splash'
🌿 Hoya coriacea 'Splash', commonly known as the Wax Plant or Splash Hoya, is a tropical evergreen vine from the Apocynaceae family. Native to Southeast Asian rainforests where it grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks and branches, this species thrives in warm, humid conditions with filtered light. It's considered an intermediate-level plant, requiring some attention to watering and humidity but rewarding growers with stunning foliage and occasional blooms. Interestingly, the waxy coating on its leaves isn't just for show—it helps the plant retain moisture in its natural habitat and reduces water loss in drier indoor environments.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya grows as a trailing or climbing vine with thick, succulent-like stems that can reach several feet in length. The leaves are large, oval to oblong in shape, and notably thick with a leathery texture. Each leaf displays a waxy, glossy surface with irregular silvery-grey splashes and speckles across the deep green background, creating a marbled effect that makes every leaf unique. The variegation appears almost painted on, giving the plant its 'Splash' designation.
FLOWER DETAILS
Hoya coriacea produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that emerge from peduncles along the vines. The blooms are typically creamy white to pale pink with a darker pink or maroon centre, arranged in rounded umbels of 10-20 individual flowers. They emit a sweet, pleasant fragrance that becomes more pronounced in the evening hours. While the flowers are beautiful, they're not the main attraction for most growers—the stunning foliage takes centre stage. Blooming usually occurs once or twice a year in mature plants, typically in spring or summer. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, maintain consistent care, and avoid moving the plant once flower buds begin to form.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, though it tolerates some morning sun. Needs 6-8 hours of light daily for best growth and variegation. Avoid harsh afternoon sun which can scorch leaves.
- 💧 Water: Allow the top half of soil to dry between waterings. Water thoroughly in spring and summer (every 7-10 days), reduce frequency in fall and winter (every 14-21 days). Bottom watering or soaking method works well to ensure even moisture distribution.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40-50%. Benefits from occasional misting or a pebble tray.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Epiphytic soil structure prevents root rot.
- 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, slightly snug rather than oversized. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years in spring when roots fill the container.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. Expect 6-12 inches of new growth in 6 months under good conditions, 1-2 feet per year. Mature vines can reach 6-10 feet in length over several years.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (20-20-20) at half strength. Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in fall, skip winter feeding.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. The sap can cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals, so handle with care during pruning.
WHERE TO PUT IT
This hoya works beautifully in bright living rooms, sunrooms, or home offices where it can trail from a shelf or climb a small trellis. Bathrooms with windows provide ideal humidity, and bedrooms with east-facing windows offer gentle morning light. It's also stunning in hanging planters where the vining growth can cascade naturally. Avoid placing it in dark corners, cold drafty areas near exterior doors, or directly in front of heating or cooling vents. Keep away from low-light basements or rooms without windows, as insufficient light will cause leggy growth and diminished variegation.
