Hoya curtisii inner varigated 6466

🌿 Hoya curtisii, commonly known as Fung Wax Flower or Hoya Curtisii, belongs to the Apocynaceae family and is a charming miniature species native to the tropical forests of Thailand and the Philippines. In its natural habitat, this petite plant thrives as an epiphyte, clinging to tree bark in humid, shaded environments. It's considered a beginner-friendly plant, making it an excellent choice for those new to Hoyas or tropical houseplants. Fun fact: despite its small leaf size (often no bigger than a thumbnail), Hoya curtisii produces surprisingly large and fragrant flower clusters that can be nearly as wide as the plant itself.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This compact Hoya has a trailing to cascading growth habit, making it perfect for hanging baskets or perching on a shelf where its delicate vines can spill over the edge. The leaves are small, rounded to heart-shaped, and have a thick, succulent-like texture. They're typically deep green with a mottled or speckled pattern of silvery-grey markings on the surface, giving each leaf a unique, ornamental appearance. The foliage has a slightly waxy finish, characteristic of the Hoya genus, and the leaves grow close together along thin, wiry stems.

FLOWER DETAILS

Hoya curtisii produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that are pale pink to almost white with deep burgundy or maroon centres. The blooms have a fuzzy, almost velvety texture and emit a sweet, honey-like fragrance that's most noticeable in the evening. The flowers are incredibly charming and add a delightful contrast to the tiny foliage. This Hoya can bloom multiple times throughout the year, especially during warmer months, if given adequate light and allowed to become slightly root-bound. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, maintain consistent watering without overwatering, and avoid removing old flower spurs (peduncles), as new blooms often emerge from the same spot.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is best, though it can tolerate partial shade. Aim for 6-8 hours of filtered light daily. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top inch or two of soil feels dry, typically every 7-10 days in spring and summer, and less frequently in fall and winter. Use the soak-and-dry method: water thoroughly until it drains out the bottom, then let the soil dry out partially before the next watering. Overwatering is a common mistake with this species.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity, ideally between 50-70%. It will tolerate average household humidity (40-50%) but may grow more slowly and be less likely to bloom.
  • 🪴 Soil: Use a well-draining, chunky mix such as a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. The soil should allow air to reach the roots and drain quickly to prevent rot.
  • 🏺 Potting: Choose a small pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or ceramic, which allows the soil to breathe. Hoya curtisii prefers to be slightly root-bound, so repot only every 2-3 years or when roots are visibly crowded. A shallow pot works well due to its trailing habit.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate. Expect a few inches of new growth over six months under ideal conditions, with vines reaching 1-2 feet in length within a year. Maximum mature vine length is typically 2-3 feet, though it remains compact overall.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer (half-strength). Reduce to every 6-8 weeks in fall and winter. A fertilizer slightly higher in phosphorus can encourage blooming.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, Hoya curtisii is non-toxic to cats and dogs. It's a safe choice for pet-friendly households.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya curtisii is ideal for bright bathrooms, kitchens, or living rooms where it can receive plenty of natural light without direct sun exposure. It looks stunning in a hanging planter near an east or west-facing window, or on a high shelf where its trailing vines can cascade down. Avoid placing it in dark corners, windowless rooms, or areas with cold drafts, as these conditions will stunt growth and prevent flowering. Keep it away from heating vents or air conditioners that can dry out the air excessively.
