Hoya 'Sunrise'

Hoya 'Sunrise'

🌿 Hoya 'Sunrise' is a stunning cultivar belonging to the genus Hoya, part of the Apocynaceae family. These wax plants originate from tropical regions across Asia and Australia, where they grow as epiphytes in humid forests, clinging to tree bark and absorbing moisture from the air. This particular cultivar has been selectively bred for its gorgeous foliage that shifts through shades of pink, cream, and green depending on light exposure. It's an intermediate-level plant, rewarding patient growers with clusters of fragrant blooms once mature. Fun fact: Hoya flowers produce nectar that can actually drip from the blooms, sometimes leaving sticky residue on surfaces below.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining Hoya displays thick, succulent-like leaves that emerge with peachy-pink tones before maturing to cream and green variegation. The foliage has a waxy, almost plastic-like texture that helps the plant retain moisture. Leaves are oval-shaped with gently pointed tips, growing along trailing stems that can reach several feet in length. The vining habit makes it perfect for hanging baskets or training up a small trellis, where the cascading stems show off the colour variations beautifully.

FLOWER DETAILS

Mature Hoya 'Sunrise' produces clusters of star-shaped flowers in shades of pink to coral, each bloom featuring a contrasting darker pink centre. The waxy flowers have a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies in the evening, making them quite intoxicating when a plant is in full bloom. The clustered umbels contain 10 to 20 individual flowers and can last for weeks without fading. Blooming typically occurs in spring through summer on mature plants, though younger specimens may take a few years to flower. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and avoid moving it once buds form, as Hoyas are sensitive to position changes during flowering.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun, which enhances the pink colouration in new growth.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 cm of soil is dry, roughly every 7-10 days in summer, every 2-3 weeks in winter. Water less frequently during cooler months. Bottom watering works well to prevent stem rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs aeration at the roots.
  • 🏺 Potting: Prefers being slightly root-bound in a pot just large enough for the roots. Plastic or terracotta both work well. Repot only every 2-3 years when roots are visibly crowded.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. New vines extend 15-30 cm per growing season. Can reach 1-2 metres in length over several years with proper care.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer or specialized Hoya food. Skip fertilizing in autumn and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, Hoya 'Sunrise' is non-toxic to cats and dogs, making it a safe choice for homes with curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place Hoya 'Sunrise' in a bright bathroom, near an east or west-facing window, or in a well-lit living room where it can trail from a shelf or hanging planter. The trailing vines look particularly striking when allowed to cascade from elevated positions. Avoid dark corners, rooms with no natural light, or spots with cold drafts from windows or air conditioning vents, as these conditions will slow growth and prevent flowering.
