Hoya danumensis subsp. amarii

Hoya danumensis subsp. amarii

🌿 The Hoya danumensis subsp. amarii is a climbing tropical vine from the Apocynaceae family, native to the rainforests of Borneo where it grows as an epiphyte on tree branches. This subspecies is suited for intermediate growers who have some experience with hoyas and understand their need for proper light and careful watering. What makes this hoya particularly interesting is that it can produce fragrant flowers multiple times throughout the year when given the right conditions, filling a room with sweet evening scent.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya grows as a climbing vine that will naturally trail or climb depending on how you support it. The leaves are thick and succulent-like with a slightly fuzzy texture, oval in shape, and display a deep green colour with subtle venation. Each leaf has a leathery feel and the foliage grows along flexible stems that can be trained upward on a trellis or allowed to cascade from a hanging basket.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers appear in rounded clusters called umbels and are star-shaped with a waxy texture. Each bloom is creamy white to pale pink with a darker pink or red centre, and they produce a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies in the evening. The flowers are visually striking with their glossy, almost artificial appearance, and they last for several days once they open. This hoya can bloom multiple times per year, usually in spring and summer, and you can encourage flowering by providing bright indirect light, allowing the plant to become slightly root-bound, and maintaining consistent care without moving it around once buds start forming.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays which can scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry, usually every 7-10 days in growing season and every 2-3 weeks in winter. Allow excess water to drain completely. Bottom watering works well to prevent stem rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40-50%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, chunky mix. Combine orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir in equal parts for proper aeration.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, only 1-2 inches larger than root ball. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years or when severely root-bound, as hoyas bloom better when slightly cramped.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow. Expect 6-12 inches of new growth in the first year under good conditions. Can eventually reach 6-10 feet in length over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced fertilizer (10-10-10 or similar) at half strength. Stop fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. The sap can occasionally cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This hoya works beautifully in a bright living room near an east or west-facing window, or in a bathroom with good natural light where it can enjoy the extra humidity. You can display it on a shelf with a small trellis for vertical growth, or in a hanging planter to showcase its trailing habit. It also does well in a bedroom as long as it gets sufficient light. Avoid placing it in dark corners, directly in south-facing window sills where sun is too intense, or in rooms without windows, as insufficient light prevents flowering and slows growth considerably.
