Hoya davidcummingii

Hoya davidcummingii

🌿 Hoya davidcummingii is a rare vining species in the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines where it grows as an epiphyte in humid mountain forests. This intermediate-level plant rewards patient growers with clusters of sweetly fragrant flowers and distinctive foliage that sets it apart from common hoyas. Here's a fun fact: unlike many hoyas that bloom readily, H. davidcummingii can take several years to mature before producing its first flowers, making that initial bloom feel like a true accomplishment.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya has a vining growth habit that works well trailing from a shelf or climbing a small trellis. The leaves are elongated and somewhat narrow, with a deep green colour and a slightly waxy surface. They have a smooth texture with prominent veining that becomes more visible as the leaves mature.

FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers emerge in small umbels with star-shaped blooms in shades of cream to pale yellow, often with darker centres. They carry a light, pleasant fragrance that's most noticeable in the evening. The waxy appearance of the flowers gives them an almost artificial quality. Flowering typically happens once or twice a year on mature plants. To encourage blooming, provide consistent care with slight temperature drops at night during fall, avoid moving the plant once buds form, and don't remove old flower peduncles as they'll rebloom from the same spot.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light works best, though it tolerates some morning sun. Aim for 6-8 hours of quality light daily to support growth and flowering.
  • 💧 Water: Water when the top half of soil feels dry, roughly every 7-10 days in summer and every 2-3 weeks in winter. Bottom watering or thorough top watering until it drains works well.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40-50% with good air circulation.
  • 🪴 Soil: Needs a chunky, well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir in roughly equal parts.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a small pot with drainage holes, preferably terracotta or plastic. Repot only when rootbound, typically every 2-3 years, as hoyas flower better when slightly potbound.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate, adding 15-30 cm of vine length in the first year under good conditions. Mature vines can reach 1-2 metres over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Skip fertilizing in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No, hoyas contain compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs, though they're generally less toxic than many houseplants.

WHERE TO PUT IT
This hoya does well in bright living rooms, bedrooms with good natural light, or near east-facing windows. It's suitable for shelves where it can trail or for hanging planters. Avoid placing it in dimly lit corners, near heating vents, or in rooms without consistent light, as low light will prevent flowering and slow growth considerably.
