Hoya deykeae

Hoya deykeae

DESCRIPTION

🌿 The Hoya deykeae is a vining tropical houseplant belonging to the Apocynaceae family, native to the mountainous regions of the Philippines. This species is named after Belgian botanist Julien Deyke and grows as an epiphyte in its natural habitat, clinging to tree bark in humid cloud forests. With its compact growth habit and striking foliage, this hoya suits intermediate growers who appreciate plants that reward patience with unique beauty. Here's a fun fact: Hoya deykeae produces some of the most intensely fragrant flowers in the entire hoya genus, with a scent that can fill an entire room during blooming season.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hoya develops as a slow-growing vining plant with stems that can trail or climb when provided with support. The leaves are thick and succulent, measuring about three to five centimetres in length, with an oval to lance-shaped form. Foliage displays a deep green colour with prominent venation that creates subtle texture across each leaf surface. The leaves have a slightly leathery feel and a matte to semi-glossy finish that catches light without being overly shiny.

FLOWER DETAILS

Hoya deykeae produces clusters of small star-shaped flowers that are creamy white to pale yellow with deep burgundy or maroon centres. Each individual bloom measures roughly one centimetre across and forms in rounded umbels of ten to twenty flowers. The fragrance is powerfully sweet with honey and vanilla notes, most intense during evening hours. These flowers have a waxy appearance typical of hoyas and create striking contrast against the dark foliage. Blooming occurs once or twice yearly, usually in spring through summer, when the plant receives adequate light and has reached maturity. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, and avoid moving it once flower buds appear.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for six to eight hours daily. East or west-facing windows work well. Avoid direct afternoon sun which can scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top half of soil feels dry, roughly every one to two weeks in growing season, less in winter. Bottom watering works well to avoid stem rot. Allow excess water to drain completely.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home conditions around 40%.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Soil should dry between waterings.
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or plastic pots with drainage holes, sized just slightly larger than root ball. Hoyas prefer being slightly rootbound. Repot every two to three years only when roots fill the container.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow growing. Expect ten to fifteen centimetres of new growth in six months under ideal conditions. Over one year, vines may extend thirty to forty centimetres. Mature vines can reach one to two metres in length over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Skip fertilizing in autumn and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya deykeae is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. The sap can cause stomach upset, vomiting, and oral irritation. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place Hoya deykeae in bright rooms like living rooms, home offices, or bedrooms near east or west-facing windows where it receives filtered morning or evening light. It works beautifully on plant shelves, in hanging planters, or trained up a small trellis or moss pole. This hoya also thrives in bathrooms with windows due to the naturally higher humidity. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, dark hallways, or directly beside heating vents or air conditioning units where temperature fluctuates dramatically.
