Hoya Erythrina
🌿 The Hoya erythrina is a tropical vining plant from the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines. This intermediate-level houseplant features thick, waxy leaves and produces clusters of sweetly fragrant flowers that bloom reliably when conditions are right. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte, climbing trees in humid forests. Here's something neat: the flowers produce nectar that can drip from the blooms, which is why some growers place trays underneath flowering plants.
FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This hoya grows as a climbing or trailing vine with somewhat woody stems as it matures. The leaves are oval to lance-shaped, medium green in colour, and have a smooth, leathery texture with a subtle shine. Each leaf is fairly rigid and sits along the vine at regular intervals, creating a neat appearance whether trained upward or allowed to cascade.
FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers emerge in rounded clusters called umbels, with each individual bloom shaped like a fuzzy star. They range from deep pink to burgundy red with lighter centres, and they release a strong, sweet fragrance that intensifies in the evening. The blooms are truly striking and last for about a week before fading. With proper care—including bright light, consistent watering, and a bit of patience—this hoya will flower multiple times throughout the warmer months. To encourage blooming, avoid cutting off the flower stalks after blooms fade, since new flowers will emerge from the same spots.
CARE INSTRUCTIONS
- 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Can tolerate some direct morning sun, but avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch leaves.
- 💧 Water: Water when the top 2-3 cm of soil feels dry. In spring and summer, this might be weekly. In fall and winter, reduce to every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to avoid wetting the leaves.
- 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40%.
- 🪴 Soil: Well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Needs aeration to prevent root rot.
- 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, sized just slightly larger than the root ball. Terracotta or plastic both work. Repot every 2-3 years in spring when roots fill the pot.
- 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth. Expect 15-30 cm of new growth per year. Can reach 1-2 metres in length over several years with support.
- 👩🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly from spring through summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. No fertilizer needed in fall and winter.
- 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoyas can cause mild stomach upset if ingested by cats or dogs, though they're not considered highly toxic.
WHERE TO PUT IT
This hoya does well in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices near east or west-facing windows where it gets plenty of bright, filtered light. It looks great displayed on a shelf where the vines can trail down, or trained up a small trellis or moss pole. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, drafty hallways, or right beside heating vents where the air gets too dry.
