Hoya Fungii (Pink)

Hoya Fungii (Pink)

🌿 Meet Hoya fungii, a charming tropical vine from the Apocynaceae family that's winning over plant lovers everywhere. Native to the limestone cliffs and rocky forests of southern China and Vietnam, this member of the Hoya genus has adapted to thrive in bright, filtered light with periods of drought. It's considered an intermediate-level plant, perfect for someone who's moved beyond basic houseplants but isn't quite ready for the fussiest specimens. Here's a fun fact: this Hoya is named after the Chinese botanist Wei-Ji Fung, who contributed significantly to our understanding of Asian flora in the early 20th century.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT
This is a slow-growing, compact vining plant that works beautifully in hanging baskets or draped over a shelf edge. The leaves are small, rounded, and slightly cupped, almost like tiny shells. They're thick and succulent in texture, with a waxy coating that gives them a subtle sheen. The foliage is a soft green with delicate pink undertones that become more pronounced in bright light, creating a gentle, almost blushing effect along the leaf margins.

FLOWER DETAILS
The flowers are the real showstoppers here. They arrive in tight umbels of fuzzy, star-shaped blooms that range from pale pink to deeper rose, often with a dark pink or burgundy centre. Each flower looks like it's been dusted with fine hairs, giving them a soft, almost velvet-like appearance. They release a light, sweet fragrance that's most noticeable in the evening. Blooms can last for weeks once they appear, typically in late spring through summer. To encourage flowering, give your plant plenty of bright indirect light, keep it slightly root-bound, and resist the urge to move it around once buds form. Consistent care and a bit of patience are key, as Hoyas often take a year or two to mature before they bloom.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is ideal, with some direct morning sun welcome. Needs about 6-8 hours of good light daily. Can tolerate lower light but won't bloom as readily.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top half of soil is dry. In spring and summer, this might be weekly. In fall and winter, cut back to every 10-14 days. Bottom watering works well to avoid getting the leaves wet.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 50-70% humidity but adapts to average home levels around 40-50%. Benefits from occasional misting or a pebble tray.
  • 🪴 Soil: Needs a chunky, well-draining mix. Combine regular potting soil with orchid bark and perlite in equal parts for ideal drainage.
  • 🏺 Potting: Prefers to be slightly root-bound in a pot just big enough for its roots. Use terracotta or plastic with drainage holes. Repot only every 2-3 years.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow grower. Expect 4-6 inches of new growth in the first year. Can eventually reach 2-3 feet in length over several years with proper care.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Stop feeding in fall and winter when growth slows.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. While not highly toxic, Hoyas contain compounds that can cause mild stomach upset, drooling, or vomiting if chewed by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT
This Hoya does well in east-facing windows where it catches gentle morning sun, or near south or west windows with a sheer curtain to filter the light. It's perfect for a bedroom, home office, or living room shelf where you can appreciate its cascading habit. Bathrooms with good natural light are ideal since the extra humidity helps. Avoid dark corners, north-facing windows with no supplemental light, or spots near heating vents and drafty doors where temperature fluctuations can stress the plant.
