Hoya GPS 7240

Hoya GPS 7240

DESCRIPTION

🌿 The Hoya GPS 7240, a member of the Apocynaceae family, is a vining tropical plant that collectors prize for its distinctive characteristics. Originally from Southeast Asian rainforests, this Hoya species thrives as an epiphyte, clinging to trees in dappled forest light. It suits intermediate growers who appreciate plants that reward patience and attentive care. Here's something interesting: like many Hoyas, GPS 7240 can live for decades and becomes more floriferous with age, often producing clusters of blooms on the same peduncles year after year.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This climbing plant produces oval to lance-shaped leaves that emerge along flexible stems. The foliage displays a deep green colour with subtle veining that catches light at different angles. Leaves feel thick and somewhat succulent to the touch, storing moisture between waterings. As the plant matures, stems develop a woody texture near the base while newer growth remains pliable and easy to train on supports.

FLOWER DETAILS

The GPS 7240 produces umbels of star-shaped flowers that range from cream to pale pink with deeper-coloured centers. Each bloom cluster carries a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies during evening hours. The waxy petals give flowers a porcelain-like appearance that lasts for one to two weeks. This Hoya typically flowers during warmer months when receiving adequate light and experiencing slight temperature fluctuations between day and night. To encourage blooming, maintain consistent care without moving the plant frequently, allow the soil to dry between waterings, and provide bright indirect light for at least six hours daily.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light works best, though it tolerates some morning sun. Aim for 6-8 hours of filtered light daily for optimal growth and flowering
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly when the top third of soil dries out during spring and summer, reducing frequency in fall and winter. Check soil moisture with your finger before watering. Bottom watering prevents water from sitting in leaf axils
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Thrives in 50-70% humidity range, though it adapts to average home conditions around 40-50%
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining mix with orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. Soil should dry relatively quickly after watering
  • 🏺 Potting: Use pots with drainage holes, sized just slightly larger than the root ball. Terracotta or plastic both work well. Repot every 2-3 years or when roots fill the container, as Hoyas prefer being slightly rootbound
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate growth with 15-30 cm of new growth in the first year under good conditions. Can reach 1-2 metres in length over several years with proper support
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced fertilizer or one formulated for flowering plants. Reduce or stop fertilizing in fall and winter
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No, this plant contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs. Keep out of reach of curious pets

WHERE TO PUT IT

The GPS 7240 works beautifully in east or west-facing windows where it receives bright morning or afternoon light without harsh midday sun. Living rooms, bedrooms, and home offices with good natural light make ideal locations. Train it on a trellis, let it cascade from a hanging planter, or grow it along a shelf edge. Avoid placing it in dim corners, near heating vents, or in high-traffic areas where stems might get damaged. Bathrooms with windows can provide the humidity boost this plant appreciates.
