Hoya Hanhiae dark Hair (deep violet) 6352

🌿 Hoya hanhiae is a rare and extraordinary epiphytic climbing wax plant in the Apocynaceae family, native to the sandy coastal lowland seasonal swamp forests of central Vietnam, particularly in Quảng Trị and Khánh Hòa provinces. In its wild habitat, it creeps along sandy ground and scrambles up the lower branches of coastal trees in warm, humid microclimates. It is an intermediate-to-collector level houseplant highly prized for its velvety, deeply pigmented violet flowers.

FUN FACT

Hoya hanhiae is named after Mrs. Nguyễn Thúy Hạnh, the person credited with discovering the plant and collecting the specimen.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

Hoya hanhiae exhibits a creeping and twining climbing growth habit that adapts readily to trellises, hoops, or elevated hanging containers. The leaves are thick, succulent, and broadly elliptical to ovate, measuring 7 to 11 centimetres in length and 4 to 6 centimetres across, with smooth margins and subtle raised midribs. The leaf surfaces are glossy dark emerald green, occasionally displaying faint silvery speckles and a very fine microscopic puberulent texture along young stems. The plant produces sturdy, flexible vines that establish quickly on vertical supports.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers of Hoya hanhiae dark Hair are among the most dramatic and deeply colored in the entire genus. It produces flat to gently convex umbels holding 15 to 25 waxy, star-shaped blossoms. In this rare strain, the corolla is an intense, rich royal violet to deep magenta, densely covered in a plush coat of microscopic velvety dark hairs that impart a luxurious tactile sheen. At the center sits a contrasting, star-shaped coronal disk in pale yellow and ruby tones. The blooms open in the evening, releasing a sweet floral perfume reminiscent of night-blooming jasmine and ripe berries. Always preserve old peduncles for recurring flowering.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Requires bright, indirect light for 6 to 8 hours daily. Gentle morning sunshine enhances dark petal pigmentation, but protect strictly from intense midday summer sun that can fade blossoms and scorch foliage.
  • 💧 Water: Water thoroughly using the soak-and-dry method when the top half of the potting substrate has dried out. Ensure flawless drainage; reduce watering frequency during colder winter months.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers elevated atmospheric humidity between 60% and 80%, reflective of its coastal Vietnamese swamp forest origins. Benefit greatly from an indoor humidifier during dry Canadian winter heating seasons.
  • 🪴 Soil: Plant in a porous, airy epiphytic blend composed of coarse orchid fir bark, perlite, pumice, horticultural charcoal, and coco chips to allow rapid moisture drainage and root aeration.
  • 🏺 Potting: Select a container with generous drainage holes and provide a sturdy trellis support. Keep the root system slightly snug to encourage prolific flowering; repot only every 2 years in spring.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate grower during warm spring and summer months, producing vigorous twining runners that leaf out steadily under warm conditions.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed every 3 to 4 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, liquid tropical houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Withhold fertilizer entirely throughout late autumn and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes. The ASPCA specifically lists wax plants (such as Hoya carnosa and Hoya kerrii) as non-toxic to cats and dogs, though Hoya hanhiae is not individually evaluated by the ASPCA. The genus Hoya is widely recognized as non-toxic, making it an exceptionally safe flowering houseplant for homes with pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Hoya hanhiae dark Hair is an exquisite centerpiece for plant display cabinets, well-lit living room shelves, and bright botanical studios. Place it near an east-facing window or 1 metre away from a south-facing window with sheer curtains. Keep the plant in warm room temperatures between 19°C and 27°C, and ensure it is safely shielded from cold Canadian winter window drafts and drying heating vents.
