Hoya imperialis (Red Form)

Hoya imperialis (Red Form)

🌿 The Hoya imperialis, commonly known as Imperial Hoya, is a stunning tropical vine from the Apocynaceae family. Native to the rainforests of Malaysia and Borneo, this species grows as an epiphyte, climbing trees in its natural habitat. The red form is particularly striking with deep burgundy-toned flowers. This is an intermediate to advanced plant, requiring patience and consistent care to thrive. Fun fact: each flower cluster can produce enough nectar to actually drip from the blooms at night, filling your home with a rich, sweet fragrance that intensifies after dark.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vigorous climbing vine produces large, leathery leaves that can reach up to 20 centimetres in length. The foliage is deep green with a smooth, waxy surface that feels substantial to the touch. Leaves emerge with a slightly bronzed tint before maturing to their rich green colour. The plant naturally wants to climb, sending out long stems that will wrap around supports or trail downward if given no structure. Growth is moderate once established, with new leaves unfurling from the nodes along the stem.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers are absolutely breathtaking and worth the wait. Each umbel holds 6 to 10 large, star-shaped blooms in deep burgundy red with fuzzy, reflexed petals. The centres are lighter, creating a stunning contrast. The fragrance is intensely sweet and almost overpowering in the evening hours, with notes of honey and spice. These blooms can last up to two weeks and appear on old flower spurs, so never remove the peduncles after flowering. Blooming typically occurs once or twice yearly on mature plants. To encourage flowering, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly rootbound, reduce watering slightly in winter, and maintain consistent care without disturbing the plant too much. Patience is essential, as it can take several years before the first bloom appears.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light is essential, with some early morning sun tolerated. Needs approximately 6 to 8 hours of quality light daily. Avoid harsh afternoon sun which can scorch leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Allow the top third of soil to dry between waterings in spring and summer. Reduce frequency in autumn and winter. Water when leaves show slight softness. Use the soak and drain method, ensuring water runs through the pot completely.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Prefers 60 to 80 percent humidity for optimal growth and flowering. Will tolerate average home humidity but may grow slower and bloom less.
  • 🪴 Soil: Requires a chunky, well-draining mix. Combine orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir or peat moss. The mix should feel airy and never stay soggy.
  • 🏺 Potting: Use a pot with drainage holes, only slightly larger than the root ball. Terracotta works well. Prefers being slightly rootbound. Repot every 2 to 3 years in spring, moving up only one pot size.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate once established. Expect 15 to 30 centimetres of new growth in 6 months under good conditions. In one year, can produce 30 to 60 centimetres of vining growth. Mature vines can reach 2 to 4 metres indoors with proper support.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Reduce to every 6 to 8 weeks in autumn and winter. Some growers use orchid fertilizer for better blooming.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No. Hoya imperialis contains compounds that can cause mild gastrointestinal upset if ingested by cats or dogs. The milky sap may also cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals. Keep out of reach of curious pets and children.

WHERE TO PUT IT

This plant does best in a bright bathroom with good humidity, or near an east-facing window in a living room or bedroom where it can receive gentle morning light. Provide a trellis, moss pole, or allow it to trail from a hanging basket or high shelf. It works beautifully in a conservatory or sunroom where conditions are more controlled. Avoid placing it in low-light corners, near heating vents, in cold drafts, or in windowless bathrooms. Keep away from areas where pets can reach the foliage.
