Hoya incrassata 'Inner Variegated'

Hoya incrassata 'Inner Variegated'

🌿 Hoya incrassata 'Inner Variegated' is a rare climbing succulent from the Apocynaceae family, native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. This intermediate-level plant features thick, waxy leaves with stunning inner variegation that creates a mesmerizing contrast between cream and green tones. In its natural habitat, it clings to tree trunks and rocks, forming dense clusters of foliage. Fun fact: the waxy coating on its leaves isn't just for show—it helps the plant retain moisture during dry spells in the wild.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This climbing hoya displays a vining growth habit that eagerly reaches for support structures. The leaves are thick and succulent-like, oval to elliptical in shape, with a glossy surface that catches the light beautifully. The inner variegation appears as creamy white to pale yellow centres, framed by darker green margins. Each leaf feels firm and slightly rubbery to the touch, a characteristic that helps distinguish it from other hoya varieties.

FLOWER DETAILS

The flowers emerge in compact umbels, each bloom resembling a perfect star with five waxy petals. They range from pale pink to peachy-coral with deeper pink centres, creating a soft gradient effect. The fragrance is sweet and honeyed, especially noticeable in the evening hours. These blooms are absolutely eye-catching against the variegated foliage, creating a striking visual display. Flowering typically occurs once or twice yearly, usually in spring through summer when the plant receives adequate light and has matured sufficiently. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and avoid cutting off old flower stalks (peduncles) as they often rebloom from the same spot.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily; tolerates some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays
  • 💧 Water: Water when top 5 cm of soil is dry; reduce frequency in winter. Water thoroughly until it drains, then empty saucer. Bottom watering works well
  • 🌡️ Humidity: 40-60% humidity range; tolerates average home conditions but appreciates occasional misting
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with perlite, orchid bark, and peat or coco coir
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or plastic pot with drainage holes; 10-15 cm diameter for young plants. Repot every 2-3 years or when severely root-bound
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Moderate to slow; expects 15-30 cm of new growth per year under ideal conditions. Can reach 1-2 metres in length at maturity
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Monthly during spring and summer with balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength; skip fertilizing in fall and winter
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: No—toxic to cats and dogs if ingested, causing vomiting, drooling, and gastrointestinal upset due to cardiac glycosides

WHERE TO PUT IT

This hoya thrives in bright living rooms, sunrooms, or east-facing windows where it can receive gentle morning light. It's perfect for hanging baskets, mounted on boards, or trained up a small trellis near a window. Place it on plant shelves with grow lights if natural light is limited, or in a bright bathroom where it can benefit from steam. Avoid dark corners, windowless rooms, or spots near heating vents and air conditioners that create temperature fluctuations. Keep it away from cold drafts and north-facing windows during Canadian winters.
