Hoya Kerrii 'Splash'

Hoya Kerrii 'Splash'

🌿 The Hoya kerrii 'Splash', commonly known as the Sweetheart Hoya or Lucky Heart Plant, belongs to the genus Hoya in the family Apocynaceae. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Thailand and southern China, this climbing succulent grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests, clinging to tree bark with aerial roots. It's an intermediate-level plant that rewards patience with its unique heart-shaped leaves and occasional fragrant blooms. Fun fact: In its native habitat, a single plant can produce vines over 4 meters long, though it grows much more slowly indoors.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This vining succulent produces thick, fleshy leaves shaped like perfect hearts, each measuring 5-15 cm across. The 'Splash' variety features deep green foliage generously speckled with silvery-grey and cream variegation that appears randomly across each leaf, creating a painted effect. The leaves have a waxy, almost rubbery texture that feels cool to the touch and helps the plant retain moisture during dry periods.

FLOWER DETAILS

Mature plants produce clusters of 15-25 small, star-shaped flowers that emerge from umbels on short stems. The blooms are typically white to pale pink with darker pink or burgundy centres, creating a striking contrast. Each flower cluster releases a sweet, honey-like fragrance that intensifies during evening hours, filling nearby rooms with a pleasant scent. Flowering occurs primarily in late spring through summer, though mature specimens may bloom multiple times per year. To encourage blooming, provide bright indirect light, allow the plant to become slightly root-bound, and avoid moving it once flower buds appear. Keep in mind that Hoya kerrii typically takes 2-3 years to reach flowering maturity, and single-leaf cuttings rarely develop into blooming plants without a node attached.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Tolerates some morning sun but protect from harsh afternoon rays which can scorch the variegated portions of leaves.
  • 💧 Water: Water deeply when the top 5 cm of soil feels dry, roughly every 10-14 days in summer and every 3-4 weeks in winter. Reduce watering significantly during cooler months. Bottom watering works well to prevent rot.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Tolerates average home humidity of 40-50% but thrives in 50-60%. Not as humidity-dependent as other tropical plants.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining, chunky mix with perlite, orchid bark, and cactus soil. Needs excellent aeration around roots.
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or ceramic pots with drainage holes, sized just 2-5 cm larger than root ball. Repot every 2-3 years in spring, or when roots fill the pot completely.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Very slow growing, producing 2-4 new leaves per year. Vines may reach 30-60 cm in one year under ideal conditions, with mature size of 1.5-2 meters indoors over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced fertilizer at half strength. Skip fertilizing completely from late fall through winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Yes, non-toxic to cats and dogs. Safe choice for homes with curious pets.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Hoya kerrii 'Splash' on a bright windowsill in an east or west-facing window where it receives gentle morning or late afternoon sun, or position it 1-2 meters back from a south-facing window with sheer curtains. It works beautifully in bedrooms, home offices, or living rooms where you can train it up a trellis or let it trail from a hanging basket. Bathrooms with windows provide ideal humidity, though adequate light is essential. Avoid placing it in dark corners, north-facing rooms without supplemental light, near heating vents that dry the air excessively, or in cold drafty areas near exterior doors during winter months.
