Hoya kerrii ‘Inner Variegated

Hoya Kerrii 'Inner Variegated'

🌿 The Hoya kerrii 'Inner Variegated', commonly called the Variegated Sweetheart Hoya, is a charming succulent vine from the Apocynaceae family. Native to Southeast Asia, this Hoya species grows as an epiphyte in tropical forests, clinging to trees with its thick, waxy leaves. The 'Inner Variegated' cultivar is an intermediate-level plant, requiring some attention to light and watering to maintain its stunning variegation. Here's a fun fact: each heart-shaped leaf can live for years on its own as a single-leaf cutting, though it won't grow new leaves without a node attached.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This Hoya grows as a slow-climbing or trailing vine with thick, succulent stems. Each leaf is perfectly heart-shaped, ranging from 5 to 15 centimeters across. The inner variegation creates a creamy yellow or pale green centre surrounded by darker green margins, making each leaf look like it's been hand-painted. The leaves have a waxy, almost rubbery texture that helps the plant retain moisture.

FLOWER DETAILS

Mature Hoya kerrii produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers in shades of white to pale pink with deep red centres. The blooms have a sweet, honey-like fragrance that's most noticeable in the evening. Each flower cluster appears on a peduncle that can rebloom year after year, making them quite special. Flowering typically occurs in summer when the plant receives adequate bright light and has reached maturity, which can take several years. To encourage blooming, provide consistent bright indirect light, allow the soil to dry between waterings, and avoid moving the plant once buds form.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright indirect light for 6-8 hours daily. Morning sun is ideal. Variegation fades in low light and burns in harsh afternoon sun.
  • 💧 Water: Water deeply when soil is completely dry, roughly every 10-14 days in summer, every 3-4 weeks in winter. Bottom watering works well. Succulent leaves store water, so underwatering is safer than overwatering.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Tolerates average home humidity of 40-50%, but appreciates 50-60% for optimal growth.
  • 🪴 Soil: Well-draining chunky mix with perlite, orchid bark, and coco coir. Avoid moisture-retaining potting soil.
  • 🏺 Potting: Terracotta or ceramic pot with drainage holes. Prefers being slightly rootbound. Repot every 2-3 years only when roots fill the pot.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Very slow. May produce 2-4 new leaves in 6 months, 4-8 leaves per year. Vines can eventually reach 1-2 meters in length over several years.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed monthly during spring and summer with diluted balanced fertilizer or orchid fertilizer at half strength. No fertilizer in fall and winter.
  • 🐾 Pet friendly: Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. Sap can occasionally cause skin irritation in sensitive individuals.

WHERE TO PUT IT

Place your Hoya kerrii in an east-facing or west-facing window where it receives bright, filtered light. It thrives in living rooms, bedrooms, or home offices on shelves or in hanging planters where the vines can trail. Kitchens and bathrooms work well if they have adequate light. Avoid dark corners, north-facing windows without supplemental light, or spots right next to heating vents or air conditioners that create temperature fluctuations.
