Hoya Kerrii x Pachyclada Hybrid 6371

Hoya Kerrii x Pachyclada Hybrid 6371

🌿 This hybrid combines Hoya kerrii, the famous "sweetheart hoya" native to mountainous regions of China and Java, with Hoya pachyclada, a thick-stemmed species from the seasonally dry tropical forests of Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Both parent species belong to the Apocynaceae family and grow as epiphytes in their native ranges. This cross brings together two distinct Hoya growth styles into one intermediate-level houseplant.

FUN FACT

Hoya kerrii is nicknamed the "sweetheart plant" because of its heart-shaped leaves, sold worldwide as single-leaf cuttings around Valentine's Day — though a lone leaf cutting without a node will stay exactly that size and never grow into a full vine.

FOLIAGE AND GROWTH HABIT

This hybrid shows a blend of traits from both parents: the thick, succulent leaf tissue characteristic of Hoya pachyclada's fleshy stems, combined with the sturdy climbing habit Hoya kerrii is known for in its mature, vining form. Growth is slow to moderate, consistent with both parent species' unhurried pace.

FLOWER DETAILS

Hoya pachyclada produces ball-shaped clusters of twenty to twenty-five fragrant flowers in spring and summer, while Hoya kerrii is known for burgundy-toned waxy blooms on mature vining plants. This hybrid can be expected to flower in clustered umbels typical of the genus once well established.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • 🌞 Light: Bright, indirect light with a little direct morning sun suits both parent species and encourages flowering.
  • 💧 Water: Let the soil dry out between waterings — both parents are prone to yellowing or root rot if kept too wet.
  • 🌡️ Humidity: Moderate humidity is appreciated, though this hybrid tolerates average indoor conditions reasonably well.
  • 🪴 Soil: A fast-draining mix is essential, since neither parent tolerates heavy, wet soil.
  • 🏺 Potting: A pot with excellent drainage holes suits it; repotting is rarely needed given the slow growth rate.
  • 🌱 Growth rate: Slow to moderate, true to both parent species.
  • 👩‍🌾 Fertilizing: Feed lightly with a diluted fertilizer a few times during the growing season.

WHERE TO PUT IT

A bright windowsill with a little morning sun suits this hybrid well. Keep it away from cold drafts and avoid overwatering, which is the most common issue with both of its parent species.
